What Your Favorite Uses for the Dreamcast?
MAME.
It's amazing to see my beloved Dreamcast playing MAME games.
The Dreamcast is probably my favorite system ever made. It was the 1st system I ever ran an emulator on and it was the 1st system that would play back-ups with a bootdisk. It was the system that changed my views of what a video game console can and should do.
I still say that if Sega would have included DVD support, the Dreamcast may have enjoyed a much longer life.

DVD playback in 1999? That would have been a bad move I think. The system would have cost way too much, and people weren't as interested in DVD as they were in 2001. Dreamcast had such a fantastic launch because they covered most of the genres from day one, and the system and games were fairly priced and in full supply. Added DVD support would have made it like the PS2 launch, except even worse. DC wouldn't have lasted the ammount of time that it did.
Mame has always been too much for me to mess with on PC. Is it simpler to operate on DC? Is the self boot ROMs image easy to make? What games run full speed?

I disagree about people not being interested in DVD playback at that time. I do understand that it would have increased the price, but when I originally bought my DC, I paid the full launch price. I don't remember exactly, but I know it was near $200. Pretty expensive at the time.
Last time I checked, the PS2 is still a very popular game system. I still contest that the dc would probably still be alive had they included DVD support. The only reason I chose dc over PS2 was I already had a dvd player, and my PSX was modded so my game collection was mostly back-ups.
As far as MAME on Dreamcast, Chui has done incredible things. His dc MAME emulator is MAME4ALL and it runs an older rom set. Alot of games run at a good speed as long as the frame skip is set to "auto". The software is still in it's alpha stage but it's got a clean GUI and supports over 100 games. If you can grab a copy that has the roms included and is set up for selfboot then it's definately the best way to go.
I don't know if you are a member of Underground Gamer, but I upped a torrent of Chui's MAME4ALL including all supported roms and I set it up for selfboot using SBI. If you would like an invite, please let me know. I'm pretty sure I have one or two left still.

But the PS2 launched at a higher price then that, right? Not to mention the fact that it instantly sold out, and stayed sold out for months, and everyone was paying over $400 for a unit on ebay. It was rediculous. I remember the consumer mentality on DVD very well in 1999. I was completely surrounded by people who said there was no way they'd be replacing their VHS collection.
Yes I am not on underground gamer. I'll check out that rom set.

Yeah thank you. I wouldn't have bought a Dreamcast at launch for $300. That's for sure. $200 was the sweet spot.
SFK, do you have a manual for this MAME4ALL? I can't figure it out.
Edit: Ok I guess the analog stick lets to insert a coin, reset, pause, and do something else...
But I can't find any games that actually work well at full speed. Many don't even start up.
