How long does it take me to overcome the fact that the game is a horrendous fireball spamfest? I find it really unfun to cosntantly try to approach through a series of sonic booms or hadoukens only to be flash kicked or shoryukened right back again. Yeah, perhaps I'm a noob, but after spending several hours playing SSFIV3D tonight, I'm so glad I picked Pilotwings as my launch game. It's not been a fun experience.

i havent played the 3ds pilot wing but the the n64 one is awesome. I wish the new one had the locals of the the whole world to venture around, instead of an island.

And yes i know what u mean some people do spam alot with fireballs and what not, i never say its cheap or wahtever because its in the game and they should be allowd to use it as much they want.

I didnt say it was cheap, I just find it incredibly unfun.

Also, i wasn't even playing people online, I was just fighting the AI opponents - Even they spam fireballs.

sorry i mention u said it was cheap. but yea it is unfun and hard as nail to get from left to right of screen to pummel him, but i have seen it done in tournaments.
Guile on the left throwing sonic booms nonstop- and e honda on left jumping and dodging all the way to right to beat his ass. Its tough but he manage to do it.

For me, Soul Calibur was the perfect first fighter. I guess that was because I'm a huge fan of the THPS series, and to me the concept of pressing an action button while at the same time tilting the stick in a certain direction seemed very logical and natural.
Otherwise, I'd say start with Street Fighter because that's basically what everyone did.

That's because you're playing with Lite controls. If you play pro, then you go against people who have to use the controls properly. With Lite controls you can just hammer the fireball button over and over. So playing somebody like Sagat means you can't get close to them because his recovery from fireballs is ridiculously quick. It also allows charge characters to break their balance since you no longer have to charge. So you can do things like flash kicks while walking forwards.

The thing about SFIV is you need to really make sure it doesn't get to that point. If you allow somebody to turtle in the corner and spam fireballs then they're going to do it. This is why you push forward and pressure them into meeting you. If they're going to fireball spam, trust me, their forward game isn't up to scratch. They're trying to distance you from them. Pick a character that has a move that can move through fireballs, like Zangief's Banishing Flat, Dudley's Ducking or Balrogs EX Dashing/Turn Punch.

All you see online are fireball spammers? Learn a character that is strong against them and dominate. There's always a character that is strong against a specific set of characters. Learn, adapt.

Here's a tip: Blanka destroys shotokans (ryu, ken, sagat, etc) because of his down+towards+HP. It travels far, is safe at pretty much any distance and slides under every projectile in the game, plus there's no charge, you can do it at any time. Blanka at mid distance from a shotokan is an extremely intimidating prospect because they'll get destroyed whatever they do unless they preempt the move with a focus attack.

But I want to use the characters I like :(. I enjoy the game when it doesnt involve spamming fireballs constantly.

Also, as stated before, I was just playing against the AI characters in Arcade mode. I play with pro controls as default anyhow.

From what I've played so far, Sakura is my favourite character. However, on a match vs a computer Ryu as her, I literally couldnt get close enough for long enough to inflict damage. He spammed fireballs, if i jumped over them I got dragon punched and if i walked forwards whilst blocking, it took ages, and once i was near and attacking he blocked everything i threw at him and dragon punched me away again during the recovery from my punches. Does that move just out-prioritise everything!?

Anyhow, I was playing on normal, so I tried again on Easy, and the same thing happened. I had to change to chun li just so i could fight a rival that doesnt spam fireballs, before switching back to sakura to fight seth (Who, if anything, was easier than ryu).

Yeah, so I suck, but it just seems to me like the entire game is gonna devolve into how to handle fireballs. This is why i prefer 3d fighters in general, I can just sidestep those. Blasphemous for a lot of you here I'm sure.

This classic spiel never gets old.

Welcome to SF though.

Joy. Im glad after all these years, its still as unwelcoming as ever. I can tell you, it's sure gotten old with me. It just seems like this game is deliberately trying to make me not like I game that I'm trying my best to enjoy.

I never liked SF2 much either.

To be honest though, after you've played the game for a bit, fireball spam is nothing. It may seem insurmountable to you, but there are a number of very effective options for you to use (block+advance, focus cancel to absorb, wisely placed jump, use fireballs to counter, use ex moves) to avoid fireball spam.
