That's something I quite like too. In fact, just about everything about the series is what I'm geared towards, but somehow I just wasn't able to get into it. His characters just didn't seem... believable, especially the children characters.

I remember opening up the book for the first time and seeing an area called "The Haunted Forest" on the map, and just being like "wait, what?". That kind of thing just kept happening to me while I read it. Maybe I fell victim to overhype.

Song of Ice and Fire was the best series I have ever read. I absolutely love it

... which means, no matter how well they do the show, I will probably be overly picky about it.

Definitely agree with this!
Bran and Arya are some of my favourite chapters now.
Also A Storm of Swords, so far for me, has been the absolute strongest in the series. Just some complete unforgettable moments in that book. I can't wait to see how that one translates to the screen.

So having just watched the first episode, here's my thoughts.

The sets, locations, minute details, are all practically perfect depictions of what was in the novel in my opinion. The casting was great as well, though Sean Bean's put on a lot of weight (I imagined Ned to be slightly skinnier, though he looks much better when side-by-side with Robert) and Sansa looked slightly older than how I imagined her. They did a good job of trying to introduce as many people in the massive cast as possible, and I think also did a good job of getting things to work with those not familiar with the novels. The shifting between plots goes well with how the novel swaps from POV character to POV character. I'll definitely try to keep up, although I don't have HBO at the moment.

Fun fact- they actually hired a group to construct the Dothraki language just for the tv show.

I don't have HBO so I can't watch it. However, I saw a rather scathing review of the premiere from a blog on usatoday. Apparently, some people are not pleased with the show's portrayal of women

Personally, I don't care how anyone is portrayed on a show as long as it is true to the setting. I'm not going to bitch if I see a pre-Civil War period piece that shows black people being degraded as slaves. That's just being historically accurate

Most blogs I've seen have had nothing but praise. Yeah, you had women concerned mainly with marriage and the girls learning "womanly" things like embroidery, you had whores, and you had women being married off for political purposes. But Westeros is based off of Medieval Europe, and those were things that happened then. I do feel that their depiction of the Dothraki wedding was a bit overboard. It was supposed to be an insane, depraved festival where less than 3 deaths is regarded as being dull, but the spontaneous orgies and topless women everywhere was a bit much.
