Heights, a movie about the lives of various New Yorkers. Good. Oh, and if you see it, keep your eyes out for The Big Bang Theory's Jim Parsons.

I like Shawshank a good deal, but this is a bit of a stretch. Yes, it has a fantastic story, excellent pacing, good acting, smart direction, and a memorable score - but there are many films for which this is true. I think Shawshank gets the recognition it does based on the story alone as the other elements, while solid, are not especially notable examples of great film making.

A bunch of 3.5/5 films lately...

Shutter Island (2010) – Quick summary: decent first act, horrible middle act, and a phenomenal third act. This is far from Scorsese and DiCaprio’s best collaboration, but it is perhaps the most ambitious. The plot keeps you guessing in all the right ways, the film has some truly memorable visuals (e.g. the death camp execution), and Scorsese uses incidental music quite well throughout. Still, it seemed like The Game (a much better film) goes to the beach…
Grade: 3.5/5

The Book of Eli (2010) - I enjoyed this more than I probably should have, but I’m a sucker for Denzel, Oldman, and McDowell, for post-apocalyptic stories, and for Tom Fucking Waits. It’s a perfect storm of guilty pleasures. Fortunately the combat scenes were a lot of fun and the acting was fairly good - they helped punctuate what was a largely predictable plot and some lazy writing. A fun way to kill a few hours, especially if you are a fan of the genre.
Grade: 3.5/5

Moon (2009) – I expected to like this one more than I did, but frankly there have been better stories of this type (about clones or about the Moon). Rockwell is great as always, and he’s quickly become one of my favorite actors from the last decade. There’s enough here in terms of solid writing and interesting directing to make me hopeful for what Ziggy Stardust Jr. might do down the road. That said, it sounds like he’s planning a trilogy based on this film, and I don’t think there’s enough here to sustain much more than the hour and a half or so that the film takes to move through the story.
Grade: 3.5/5

I liked Shutter Island a lot. It was no departed, but as film noir homage, it was awesome. Funny that you'd watch it while we're playing Deja Vu.

Your Highness 7/10
Fun stoner comedy meets D and D.

Trailers don't do the movie justice, but trailers for comedies rarely do.

Sidenote: All of the trailers that played before this movie drove me nuts. Why does Cameron Diaz keep getting work. Shes not a good actress and shes not funny.

The Social Network.

You know that one about Facebook lol. Was surprisingly okay, although apparently the characters in it are betrayed nothing like their real life counterparts. Also Justin Timberlake. I hate to say it, but he's actually a pretty good actor IMO. His music is another story though...

Tarnation (2003)

One of the most captivating movies I've seen in a while. It's a documentary about a homosexual named John in his late twenties/early thirties who is dealing with the fact his schizophrenic mother is near death after almost overdosing on lithium. The film takes you back to the Mother's childhood, where she underwent countless shock treatments. The movie looks as if it was made on basic editing movie software, but it doesn't take away anything from the movie.

You grow to feel sympathy for John, as over the course of the movie, his mother is raped in front of him, taken away from him, and as early as age 11 John shows footage of him cross dressing and creating characters to help him cope. But the movie isn't all depressing, and it's available to stream on Netflix.

Sucker Punch. Loved it, no matter how stupid the action scenes were  . I don't understand why people accepted Spiderman but still haven't warmed up to anime styled movies (yeah she was blasted in the air, she landed and survived, so?)

Escape to Athena. A fictinoal account of a Greek partisan group on Rhodes Island during WWII. Fun movie and Roger Moore was admirable as always.

Image

The Kentucky Fried Movie. A surprisingly funny spoof movie from the 1970s. The Kung Fu segment went on for too long but otherwise it's much funnier than any of today's parodies/spoofs. Not one to watch with your elders however

Image

Top Secret!. From the people who made Airplane came Top Secret which is still very watchable. Val Kilmer's singing was the only thing I kept skipping

Image

Phas Gaye Re Obama. As promised I watched a Bollywood movie and can't say I regret doing so. Fun comedy but there was nothing laugh-out-loud about it.

Image

Smokey and the Bandit 2. I'd be lying if I said anything with Burt Reynolds in it could be flat-out unwatchable. Entertaining road movie and the motorised showdown towards the end was worth holding out for.

Image

Merantau Warrior. Probably the first Indonesian movie I ever watched. The fight choreography was HK-grade greatness but the story was clichéd beyond belief.
