Game of Thrones: New HBO Series

Post by winds »

Is anyone going to be watching this new series: Game of Thrones on HBO ?

I am a huge, huge, huge fan of the books and can not wait until April 17th, the premiere of the series. I just watched the first 15 minute premiere, and thought it was extremely well done. The look, feel, and characters stayed true to what I saw in my minds eye while reading the books. Based off the strength of those first 15 minutes, I feel confident that HBO will treat the series right and make a very high quality series.

Also, the news of the 5th book finally being completed after 5 or so years has got me excited as well :)

If you are a fan of the series and haven't watched the first 15 minutes of the first episode yet, check it out on the HBO website. Or if you haven't heard of the books or the show but love fantasy with a very mature/adult theme, check it out.

I don't have cable, let alone HBO. So hopefully this is on Hulu. If not it will be on Demonoid at least. I'm excited about news of A Dance With Dragons finally being released though.

I plan to give it a shot through a few episodes at least. I have never read the books.

I'm more excited that he's finally cranking out the next book!

For those of you that haven't read the books, they're fantastic. It's not your typical fantasy fare (aka Robert Jordan, Tolkien, etc), it's more focused on intense character and familial bonds with all the drama, intrigue, incest, murder and sex you can shake a stick at. I doubt the television show, even with HBO at the helm, could come close to capturing the intricacies of the story, but what the hell -- Rome was cancelled, the lead actor on Spartacus is dealing with Cancer, even the Tudors is gone. It's time for a good period drama. Probably better that this is complete fabrication, as there's nothing like "historical accuracy" to get in the way of a good show. :)

And how. I've been waiting for the final book since 2005. I refused to read A Feast for Crows until this next one gets released.

You'll probably be waiting a lifetime for the final two books (The Winds of Winter, A Dream of Spring) at the rate that he's going!

The only positive part is that I'm sure A Feast for Crows read back to back with A Dance with Dragons will give a much fuller sense of satisfaction .. because let me tell you, AFFC is AMAZING, and there's just so much more one wants to know that's supposed to be answered in the companion book.

Hurry up, Martin!

I'll check this out, but I have to admit I this series was never able to grab me very much. I only read the first book, but I just didn't like it. I really tried to get into it, as I'm pretty big into fantasy novels. People seemed to go on and on about how great the characters were, but the characters were actually my biggest gripe.

A lot of interesting characters start popping up after the first book (fuck yeah Davos), and some of the crappier characters get better (Sansa, Sandor, Jaime).

Another reason people like the books is because Martin doesn't fuck around with character deaths. Nobody's safe, which you know if you read the first book.
