An element of its time perhaps. There definitely was something special and satisfying about switching those discs, it just made you feel like you were really getting somewhere and accomplishing something. I don't know if I miss it exactly, but it's certainly nothing I have or ever will complain about when I'm doing my retro gaming. Good times.

The Star Ocean 4 thing is laughable though, that I hate. I'm pretty sure I've played a newer game that did that as well, talk about annoying.

And yeah, as for the cart thing... yikes. I remember hearing it cost like ~$5 to make an N64 cart (don't quote me on that), and I'll never forget those brand new $70 N64 games. Hot damn.

I loved having the weight of the double case ps1 games. It added a physical dimension to the epicness of the game ahahah. And the moment the game would say insert disc 2 I always felt like things were going to get more intense.

Also, don't forget multiple covers for the disks :D. My PC copy of FF8 has 5 disks, so I have Edea, Squall, Rinoa, Seifer and...(opens up box)...Laguna.

As yes, definitely loved the multiple covers.

And yet, when they released FF13 on the 360, which came on 3 disks, they just had the logo on each disk....FAIL. Heck the PS3 version had Lightning on the 1 it had disk.

Same thing going on with me. When a game had multiple discs, it was just like "oh shit..." It was awesome. But at the same time, I think one of the PS3's coolest features is it's ability to fit entire games on one disc.

I miss the reign of JRPGs, but I don't miss the disc swapping.

I never gave a shit about disc swapping. Everytime I got to the middle of Star Wars Rebel Assault 2, I just went: "Gotta put the second disc in."

I guess I kind of agree with everyone else here: It was cool back then for various reasons, but I don't really miss it.
