Just to add to this, I'd suggest playing a patched English language ROM of the NES version (if emulation is an option). The DS remake goes a bit off tangent and takes too many liberties with the game's structure in my opinion. I wasn't a fan.

It's a genuine shame that the WSC remake got canned, because if it didn't, I bet we would have seen follow up remakes in English on the GBA and the PSP just like we have with I, II and IV.

Do the loading times speed up when played via PS2?

If they do it's not to a significant degree. It's not bad load times because of a slow drive; it's a poorly coded port.

I honestly don't understand the lack of attention FF III gets from Square. Everything else pre FF VII has seen at least 3 iterations on different consoles even outside Japan. I mean if FF II gets a second chance, any entry in the series should deserve a second chance.

The story in FFIII is extremely thin, especially when compared to its immediate predecessor. FFI gets a pass since it was the original.

No kidding! I really lament the failed Wonderswan port. You know they would have then ported it to GBA since most of the work would have already been done. But alas, fate is cruel.
However, while I do still like/prefer sprites, I do appreciate the DS game.

Yeah, if the WSC port went though, we would have definitely seen more remakes.

I only played Final Fantasy III on the DS, and didn't think the game was bad by any means. But I think it would be cool if they came out with a version more faithful to the original a la 1 & 2 for the PSP. I might pick it up because i don't remember the game that well and only have it for the DS.

brunoafh wrote:It depends on how much you like FFIV. Have you played through and beaten the original or the GBA one? I'm pretty opinionated against the DS remake, but unless you've played and completed an original iteration of the game and just want to see it again with a major overhaul, I really can't recommend it.

The only positive noteworthy feature is the addition of the Augment system, but it's far from enough to excuse all of the complaints I have with the DS one. I guess it's an ok remake, a lot of people seemed to like it, but the problem is that it's less enjoyable than the original in just about every way. My biggest gripe, of course, is the art direction. It doesn't fit FFIV at all, and kind of completely ruins the experience for me. It kind of worked for FFIII, but it just doesn't feel or look right in FFIV.
I see. Honestly I've never really been interested in it... so perhaps I will just skip out on it and maybe check out the PSP remake someday instead, although I'm hardly ever motivated to play my PSP, or DS when it's not Castlevania. lol

I played FFIV first on the PSX only actually, so I got to live through the "Hard Type" which didn't seem all that insanely tough or anything, but I never finished my replay of the SNES or GBA versions so it's hard to compare. The GBA version definitely seemed easy though. Aside from the really bad load times on the PSX version, it was the only way for me to play it at the time, and I liked it quite a bit (speaking for the game itself here). Plot/character wise I think it's pretty crazy how weak FFV is compared to it honestly... and I still say FFIV has some of the best music and themes in the entire series.

Yeah, the PSX version is a good version to play. Best case scenario is to play the original SFC one patched in English if you ask me, but the PSP remake is shaping up to be the best iteration, even if it features the reduced difficulty seen in the GBA one.
