FF Games Help.

Post by CDink »

sorry for all the posting. I basically want to know what the DEFINITIVE version of the releases are...what order to play them in...wether it's worth playing more than once...etc.

Naturally VII-XIII are straightforward, one version of each.

But I and II. Is Origins the best bet? The individual PSP remakes?

Anthology and Chronicles I have. But, is that ALL I need?

Should I get the IV remake for DS? The upcoming PSP remake?

The GBA IV,V,and VI?

Sorry again for all these questions.

I'm not so sure that there are definitive versions of the games. Each release has their own merits.

FF1- Personally, I still enjoy the NES original (the outdated graphics are charming to me here). But the GBA version was also enjoyable and had extra (optional) dungeons. But if you want updated graphics plus original gameplay (Magic System), you'd want FF Origins (also has extra menus like the Bestiary). I have all 3 I mentioned. I don't see a point to the PSP version though (but you may if you get FFII and don't want a collection with FFII as well).

FFII- I approve of the PSP version benefits here. The spells are more impressive and the updates just add more to the atmosphere of the game.

FFIV- I think was a decent enough port to PS1 (no worthwhile extras though). The GBA game had a flaw in the Active time battle (in US version), but was nice to play on a portable anyways (has bonus dungeons).
I haven't played the DS one yet, but you may as well get the PSP version if you like the 3D update (as it's all the DS version and more).
So you may as well stick with your FF Chronicles for the original version.

FFV- I'd do the GBA version. I put up with the PS1 version (and its sorry load times) back then, but since there's a fast portable version, there's no reason to do that now.GBA ver. has a couple extra classes too.

FFVI- That's a hard one. I say play the original if possible. Otherwise, the GBA game was pretty good (plus had a few bonus quests), but suffered in the (beautiful) music. The PS1 had some bonus menus (bestiary and a few collection infos), but the load times are almost intolerable (music wasn't perfect here either). I play all 3 because I love it the most.

Hope I was at least some help and wasn't too confusing.

You might try looking here too (you'll have to click on the games for the versions opinion of each game, FF1 FFIV, FFVI):

I never cared for the look of FFIV on the GBA, but it was nice seeing what they did with it on the DS. Never played it on the PSP so I can't comment there. I pretty much stick to the original system even in emulation, although I've been wanting to play the original NES Final Fantasys on different systems, just never got around to doing so.

If you don't go with the original for FF, got with the Dawn of Souls (1-2) GBA port instead of Origins I'd say, so you can avoid loading times and such. I'd take FF5's GBA port over the Anthology (PSX) version as well like mentioned above. I hear the PSP version of FF2 is the definitive version of that one though.

FF4 on FF Chronicles (PSX) is supposedly the "Hard Type" release, but that's the way I played it first and didn't notice it being brutally hard or anything. The GBA release is decent but has weird lag and other issues, I'd say just get a copy of "FF2" for the SNES if you can. I'd recommend that route for FF6 (FF3 SNES) too, just play the original.

FF - PSP standalone.

FFII - PSP standalone.

FFIII - I've only played the NES translated ROM hack. I don't like the look of the DS version.

FFIV - wait until April 19th and get the PSP release so you can also play Afteryears and the linking quest.

FFV - PS1 or GBA?

FFVI - PS1... mainly because of the music on the GBA port.

Get the PSP version of FFIV that's coming out. Avoid the DS one, it should not be your first way to see FFIV by any means.

No sir. You are forgetting the load times on the PSX port. Those are far more grievous an error than any music issues.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Is the DS remake worth checking out though? Honestly the graphics kind of turned me off, if I can say that. Pro sprites baby! ...

But the PSP remake coming out does look amazing, I'm mostly interested in it since it includes The After Years. But man, hopefully it's the last time they remake IV.

Besides all that, the ps1 port is identical to the SNES verison. No reason to play the ps1 version over it.

It had a bestiary unlockable thing for all the units in the game and other stuff though, but nothing you wouldn't find in a guide book or something. So yeah, no reason to play that over the SNES version. I think it was FF4 on the PSX that had the worst loading times, going to the menu felt like it took ages, and Chrono Trigger was a real drag with the battles.
