When I was in high school, it was the worst job market for students in decades. A.K.A. last year and the year before.
You know, you'd think my volunteer work and Eagle Scout honor would get a return interview at the very least, but none last year. Zero. Out of around 30 apps I filled out and turned in.
I don't even live near where all the illegal immigration stuff is happening.

I wouldnt call it lazy. I just didnt want to sit behind a fryer and ask "would you like fries with that?" I eventually found a job at 17 as a mason. Thats not lazy work. Wasnt blaming illegals but in my area if you wanted to work on a farm or in a restaurant as a bus boy you were shit out of luck. No this generation of illegals just abuses government hand outs and and shoot boarder control.
I don't like getting into immigration arguments because I'll probably be chastised as THE FOREIGNER (also because I'm very pro-open borders, or, more acurately, pro-no borders).
But I always say that Americans are generally very anti-immigration... when they go into the voting booth. Outside, they do business with immigrants, rent them houses, sell them food, educate their kids, give them jobs. It's a very abstract anti-immigration feeling. On the concrete level, Americans love immigrants.
Amyway, I'm gonna drop this video here:
It's economist Bryan Caplan's interesting lecture on immigration titled "Immigration Restrictions: A Solution in Search of a Problem".
Basically he says that open immigration is better, but even if we assume several points of the anti-immigrationists, looser immigration standards are still a more sensible solution.
No. You know what? I can't do it today. I'm tired of trying to educate the ignorant who are usually ignorant because they lack the capacity to be educated. It's a losing battle.
I blame No Child Left Behind and the general rape of public education that has gone on in this country for the past 10 years. From where I sit, all that bullshit is now creeping into higher ed and we're going to be much worse for it.
I'm convinced that we're sliding towards Idiocracy at alarming speed.

Some philosopher said (can't remember his name, I'm going to have to check with my sister), that the idiots are winning, cause smart people only have few kids so they can invest a lot of time in raising them, while idiots have as many kids as they randomly get. That is why the middle ages happened
Seriously dude, I would like to see what you have to say.

That is essentially the idea behind Idiocracy: trailer park trash breeds like rabbits, resulting in a formidable demographic of large neanderthals who make decisions based on personal gratification. That movie is frighteningly prophetic.

I've had my say in political threads here on the forums many times over the past several years, so I just don't have the energy to go at it right now. I just get infuriated at the infantile level of our political discourse in this country (and reflected in threads like this) and the growing cultural disdain for education and intellectual discussion.

What movie?
Dude, you really shouldn't give up trying to educate. I've gotten into many strong word fights with ignorant people, about immigration and the environment, and while most of them didn't change a bit, a few of them DID listen (after the 10th time), and if you keep presenting reasonable arguments, more and more people might start seeing the truth.

I am not giving up trying to educate - I do it for a living and see the value all the time. But...for now I am giving up trying to do it about these particular political issues on a video game forum. At least for the time being.
The sad thing Dsh is that I agree with your sentiments exactly. I find myself hoping that maybe if I had the proper perspective, I'd see that the vast majority of people had ALWAYS been so closed minded and reluctant to learn lest they challenge themselves.
At least then the future couldn't be any more bleak than the past, no? What a sad thing to have to hope for.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
