This, I have gotten a handful of friends into fighting games by doing this when they come around, the use to be button mashers, now they are just crap

Marvel vs Capcom 3 is a very good bet.

Once you learn a few of the characters and how to calculate your moves, then I'd suggest moving up to "Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting" or "Super Street Fighter II Turbo" and adjusting your level of speed and difficulty accordingly.

I was thinking the exact same thing.
SFII. Either "World Warriors" or "Champion Edition"
So no Alpha or Super Street Fighter, hust the plain old versions. Once you get bored it means you got better and you can move on to anything actually. Just keep playing it for a good while and kick their asses hard. Good luck!

I would just suggest you pice a fighting game franchise that really appeals to you and practice practice practice. Eventually it will become easy and second nature to execute moves.

If you really want to dumb it down, you can try Super Gem Fighter. I've said this before, but that game is like the preschool of fighters in every way.

i've been a tekken fanatic for many years and from my experience if your a tekken fan. Please give tekken5dr a chance its actually well more balance than 6.

+Other pros are when you being juggled and u fall you do not bounce back up like tekken6.
+ Load times are way more much more faster'
+ ps3 it plays in 1080p

SFIV especially has been made to be really beginner friendly on the lower difficulties. There are a lot of easy attacks to pull off that will slowly get you into the harder stuff. Plus it's a lot slower than, say, the VS. series, so it's less daunting. Tekken I liked because it just felt a lot different from any other fighter I'd played before. It was the one that really got me into fighters. The whole system is completely different from SF. It's all about combinations of the four face buttons, with each button aligned to one limb. So it's a little easier to grasp how it works when you're starting out. I found SF hard at the beginning because of the quarter-circles and everything, and getting the timing just right. There's a lot less of that in Tekken. And Tekken 6 is just so smooth that it works really well. I haven't played much of Tekken 5 (on PS2), but I've heard it's pretty much just as well-made as 6 if not better for it's era. It's probably cheaper, though I think 6 has dropped pretty low in price these days anyways.

You should read this guide about footsies: http://sonichurricane.com/?page_id=1702

It gives you some idea about the mind games that make fighting games interesting. After you get more experience in a game, it might be a good idea to read the guide again.

I would start with newer games like Super Street Fighter IV and Marvel vs Capcom 3, just because there's a lot more information available to help you out. There are guides, articles, and glossaries at http://shoryuken.com, http://option-select.com, http://eventhubs.com, and http://sonichurricane.com. Be sure to check out the forums at those websites too.
