Virus from homepage required reboot to factory settings!!!!

Post by Bikeage »

I've dealt with viruses before.... but damn. I've noticed that Racketboy's homepage occasionally set off my malware detector, but its always takes care of it right away, and I recall a topic concerning such and thought it had been dealt with.

Today though, immediately after opening the Racketboy homepage my antivirus popped up, said I was infected and started to clean up, then it froze. Then some bogus "Windows security" program started some kind of scan. Now, i've been to enough shady sites to know this was not legit, and removed similar malware. Not this... it would not let me access Task Manager, any installed antivirus programs, CC cleaner, system restore, nothing.

After a few system restarts and trying to run any of the above programs with no success I said fuck it, rebooted in safe mode and did a factory reset. I didnt lose anything much, but damn, makes me think twice about visiting the homepage again, much less patronizing the store as I have done. For this post I went straight to the forums with no problem. Just wanted to bring this to everyone's attention, hope it doesnt happen to anyone else.

Maybe it has to do with the Google Ads?

Yeah, sorry to hear that, but the Google Ads is the only thing that would make much sense.
But I would think they keep tights tabs on that stuff....

Considering how big Google is now it doesn't surprise me.

I picked up the same damn virus (bogus windows security) a couple of weeks ago.

It wasn't from Racketboy, but my experience was similar to yours.

Yeah, I've heard of a lot of the fake virus scanner things on various sites lately. I think when you click on them, that's what causes the virus sometimes...

Wouldn't surprise me.

In my case though, it was a full on attack the moment I opened a page.

Its a money scam too. It pulls up this windows security thing, and rattles off about a hundred viruses you supposedly have, and how "upgrading" your security for $50 is the only way to fix it. Scare tactics for people who can't recognize it for what it is. Meanwhile it slowly disables the computer, as Bikeage unfortunately experienced...

Sad thing is, the damn thing wouldn't be so prevalent if it wasn't working on people.
