Not in reply to any one person in particular.

If you enjoyed/used/whatever the product without paying for it, that is lost revenue, because in order to be making use of it, you were supposed to exchange money for it. Each measurable download of the digital item was a *potential* sale yes -- but because they got the full use of said item, that is *actual* lost revenue.

I'm beginning to feel like I'm obtuse here.

Why? Why is it lost revenue? Please explain thoroughly what you mean by lost revenue.

I might download somebody's album, I decide I like it, I then go out and buy their back catalogue. If it wasn't for that initial act of piracy they would have gotten nothing from me. Instead they got 2-3 sales from me that they wouldn't have gotten otherwise. See? It works in reverse too.

Wrong. It is a lost sale when someone chooses piracy instead of normally buying something. If you never would have bought it in the first place, there is no sale to lose.

I am boycotting Sony. In other words, I will never give them money, period. If I go and pirate some PS3 games, Sony doesn't lose money because there was never gonna be any money from the start.

I pre-ordered Billy's Boot Camp for the Wii yesterday. If a leaked copy showed up on torrent sites today and I decided to download that, and then canceled my pre-order, that would be a lost sale.

There is a difference. Please understand.

If you desire it enough to pirate it and play it, then that is al lost sale, because if piracy didn't exist, to play that game would have required you to buy it.

Maybe you wouldn't have bought it at retail, maybe you would, but if you wanted it, took it, and didn't pay for it, it's stealing.

Your argument is you wouldn't have bought the games anyway, but the only games that you could say for certain you would never buy are the ones you dont want to play anyway, in which case, why pirate them?

There's plenty of games I thought I wouldnt be buying and then a little way down the line picked up, because of some offer, or just a sudden urge to play it.

Yep, that's totally viable, and may be the case sometimes. It's NOT the case far more though.

Yep, what you say is 100% true.

But if the opportunity to pirate whatever PS3 games you absolutely must play despite being on some virtuous video game "boycott" was never there, you'd be that much more inclined to give Sony (or more accurately, the game developers) your money. That's the problem. Please understand.

Sure, pirated copies downloaded =/= amount of copies that would have been sold. No argument there. Many pirates are just young jobless teenagers that would have no means of paying for the game anyway. But saying that pirating does not negatively affect game sales in any way is just flat out ignorance. If no one had the temptation of being able to just download a game without any hassle via Pirate Bay or what have you, you would see more copies being sold.

Download a PS3 game to try it out. Buy it for the 360. Win-win! Game developers are getting compensated and you're sticking it to Sony!

I'm a genius!

No, you are mistaken. If piracy didn't exist, I would still boycott Sony and just never play the game at all. That's my whole point.

One of the following 2 things will happen:
1. I don't buy the PS3 game, but I pirate it.
2. I don't buy the PS3 game, and I don't pirate it.

In both cases, Sony gets no money. There is no lost sale and there is no harm done either way.

Is that why today games sell waaaaaay more than they used to in the 80s and early 90s?

A larger market? More retail outlets? They are mainstream now? DVD and Blu Ray tech as bait for non gamers? Games are relatively cheaper than they used to be? Take your pick. It's kinda unfair to compare the gaming world today to what it was in the 80's and pre-Playstation era.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I buy more games now because I am an adult and I have a lot more money than I did as a kid.
