This has a nice and hilarious theory for how the game ended up the way it did. It's also a pretty good writeup and review on the game itself.
Wow, I've just spent so much time reading stuff on that site at work I've been neglecting Racketboy all week. I've gotten back into FFXII again because of the site and now remember how incredible it is :D

Yeah, happened to me when I first stumbled onto it too.

Also, I just googled what the international edition of FF12 had, and I have to say

Guys, I want to replay FF12 from the start, cause I quit playing the game 2 years ago, and can't remember what was happening. Any good (spoiler free) guides, on how to easily level/bulldoze through the game?

I just never got the license board, too complex, without a good enough tutorial. (Why shouldn't I just make everyone wear the best armor again?)

This killed FFXII for me:

Really though, I thought it was a pretty decent game. I wasn't wowed by it. Even if the story was allowed to do what it originally intended to and focused Basch and his brother, it still wasn't all that great. The game just had this weird overall feeling like it was trying to bore me or something. The license system was ok, but nothing great. I can't see myself going back to replay it.

Just read the OP. I would really like to believe that this is what they intended, but I just do not see it being intentional.

It was a good attempt to make one of the worst FF games post 4 a little better, but it is still a weak game IMO. Squall just did not do it for me as a main character. I really didn't like every character being from the same place, being able to do the same things, and having little that set them apart from each other (aside limit breaks, which was pretty much the only move you had to do to get through the entire game)

The only FF game I enjoyed less was 12, in which I did not get attached to the main character once. I actually found myself asking why he was even there, and if it would change anything if he wasn't. I mean, shit, the most badass character in that game, who saves everyones ass in the end, isnt even in your damn party.

Ok, rant over. Time to go play some Final Fantasy 9.

I never finished FF12 myself. I got really far, but after those 10+ hour segments of NO STORY, I kind of lost interest I guess. The characters all had great introductions and such but after that, there was just like no development. It probably didn't help that director Matsuno (FFT, Tactics Ogre, Vagrant Story, Ogre Battle, etc...) had to leave close to the end of its development due to being really sick or something. I think he even publically apologized saying maybe it didn't live up to the hype or something.

But the gameplay was great, music and settings were awesome, the towns were so lively, lots of customization, I personally liked the License Board a lot more than FF10's Sphere Grid. Seriously FF12 is why I think FF13 sucked quite a bit in the long run. Somehow I finished FF13, but damn did that battle system have so many problems and felt so backwards compared to FF12 it was crazy. Not being able to set ANY perimeters for your dumb friendly AI to follow and such was just so stupid, or how about if the party leader dies in a battle... it's game over, despite technically being able to play as all the characters. What!?! And how about that ... leveling grid thing, Crystarium? Whoever designed such a horribly useless menu should be fired. The system was a complete straight line with a few branches, it was so tedious to navigate later in the game if you forgot something way down on the lower levels. Such a pointless system.

So FF12 wasn't mindblowing to me, but I'd certainly put it way above FF13. And the things I've heard about the international edition with the job system and improvements sound really awesome.

Only thing that keeps me from attempting to replay FF12 thesedays... inverted horizontal camera controls that you can't change. UGH! That took awhile to get used to it when I first played it, lol.

In the end though, I'd say FF12 is kind of like Vagrant Story Lite. Which I liked a lot more. 8)

I wil admit, 12 had a lot going for it. I liked the battle system, and the liscence grid was a neat idea.

The story is what really turned me off to the game. I just could not get interested (and believe me, I was trying). The characters were so freaking bland. If at any point in the game any of those characters would have died, with the excpetion of baltier, I would not have cared in the least. Final Fantasy 4 had me more attached to the characters than 12 did.

However, I have not played 13. I can't compare 12 to 13, but comparing it to the prior final fantasy games, I can honestly say I enjoyed X-2 far more than 12, and even enjoyed being completely overpowered and spending massive amounts of time menu-whoring in 8.

Yiazmat is the only reason I pushed myself to the end... and I have to say, it was worth it. I really enjoyed actually doing that fight. I wish the rest of the game was half as interesting as that one boss.
