I'm in the mood for a new PS2 RPG, looking for some advice from you guys. I actually haven't played many of the PS2's RPGs. I've played the Square games, King's Field IV, Valkyrie Profile 2, and Eternal Ring. Probably some others that have slipped my mind.
I'd be interested in hearing opinions on the games I have listed, feel free to suggest one I don't have listed as well. I'm not very interested in the Persona games, and I'm kind of burnt out on Tales games after recently finishing Tales of Vesperia.
Which PS2 RPG?
Re: Which PS2 RPG?
If you did not like the Persona games, you probably would not like other SMT games. Suikoden III is a great game. It is different in how you get to play other characters perspectives of the story.
Re: Which PS2 RPG?
if you have Digital Devil Saga 1, I would suggest finishing the 2nd. If you have not complete it nor have a copy, you could still play the 2nd, but will miss some things.
Otherwise the Suikoden series on PS2 isn't the same as it is for PS1, but most reviewers would say III and V are the ones worth your time, and skip the rest.
FoB: Dragon Quarters is a hard RPG, and you don't get by by level-grinding.

Re: Which PS2 RPG?
I've honestly heard a lot of good things about the Shadow Hearts series, but haven't gotten around to it myself. Apparently it was made by a team of dev's that split from Squaresoft back then, kind of like with Monolith-soft whom went on to do Xenosaga (why isn't that an option?
)
That said from the list, I can definitely say Suikoden 5 was amazing stuff to me, and connected a good bit to the first two games a lot so that was a huge plus as well. Only problem I remember is that the games environments were kind of dull and empty at times, like you could tell Konami didn't give them the best budget to work with. I don't remember bad voice acting or anything though.

Wow, I didn't know that. That's really interesting, I was honestly leaning towards Shadow Hearts, and now I think I am even more.Xeogred wrote:I've honestly heard a lot of good things about the Shadow Hearts series, but haven't gotten around to it myself. As for Xenosaga, I'm not sure if it's something I'm into. Not right now at least. I remember not liking it very much way back in the day at a buddy's house. Being that I'm a big Xenogears fan, I'll probably have to try it sometime though.
Re: Which PS2 RPG?
I voted for Dragon Quarter because it's such a misunderstood game. I think you'd give it a fair shake.
Re: Which PS2 RPG?
I haven't played the first shadow hearts, and I haven't started the third, but I got like 2/3 of the way through the second game, Covenant, and it's probably one of my favourite ps2 rpgs. It had an enjoyable involved battle system (if you're into rhythm tapping) and the humour was fantastic. I even found the setting of the game to be really interesting and the characters are all very unique. I've finally picked up my own copy and have yet to start it again due to lack of time. Had borrowed a friends copy and lost my file due to memory card failure...
How is Eternal Ring? I always see it and am tempted to grab it.

Supposedly Shadow Hearts 1-2 are directly related and connected, but I hear 3 is kind of separate and not as good apparently.(-_-) wrote:I haven't played the first shadow hearts, and I haven't started the third, but I got like 2/3 of the way through the second game, Covenant, and it's probably one of my favourite ps2 rpgs. Re: Which PS2 RPG?
I know they make a few references to 1 about some kind of relationship between the Yuri and a girl from the first game, but I don't feel like I was missing a significant chunk of the plot. The third game does have a completely different cast of characters and setting though. I can't really compare them too much but I know the third one had an equally colourful and absurd cast of characters and had the same quirky humour from the hour or two I did play of it.
Re: Which PS2 RPG?
I've heard good things about Suikoden III, but I don't like Suikoden's playstyle so no matter what they fixed I never tried it . I heard great things about Shadow Hearts and only played it for a few minutes. Since I didn't give Shadow Hearts a fair chance I shouldn't say anything about either of those games but from what I hear you'd have a less grindy more enjoyable time with SH. Either way you won't be disappointed. I didn't like the BOF game and if you're playing a DDS game you should probably try the more recent variants since they get exponentially better according to my friend who has played nearly all of them. The last PS2 RPG that engrossed me was Mana Khemia. Before that I was playing PS1 RPGs. I shouldn't even express my opinion but since I've considered all of them before trying to find the next epic adventure (except Wild Arms) here is is.
