So here's my theory:

I think Nintendo had planned Game & Watch Gallery 2 for a standard GB release and colorized it at the last minute (it couldn't have been hard with one screen mini-games).
I think that would also explain the "Game Boy" (without the color name logo) instruction manuals. They were probably already printed and so why not use them anyways.

But it makes sense that the un-colorized rom still survived in some form. It's kind of cool that it exists, even if it serves little purpose.

I'd still like to think that I did see some kind of unreleased prototype gray cart of the game (even though it's likely just a flawed memory), but I've given up the search.

--EDIT--
noiseredux wrote: as far as the ROM goes... I just don't know man. It's weird. I'm just saying I've got no proof of it existing. The ROM maybe proves that it was developed in b/w. Maybe a prototype exists. But as far as actually available legitimately in a store like you mention... I have no proof.

Yes, Wario Land II existed both ways. As did Centipede. And a few others. But I have no reason to believe that G&WG2 did.

(btw, I dont think yr nuts. At all. This is the kind of shit I obsess about as well. Haha)
I just saw your other post (did you add this as an edit?)
So I think we're on the same page at this point

Glad you don't think I'm insane (though I haven't been tested). :P
One of the reasons bring up these types of things is because I need further advice and info from people like you. I do my own research too, but come up short sometimes.
Anyways, I like to challenge facts until there are no possible reasons to doubt an issue. That way, I can be confident in my findings.

well that's possible considering it was already released as a GB cart in Japan.

THIS will make you happy my new friend. I decided to contact Dain from NintendoAge about this thread. Like I said, he owns CIB copies of every GB game and was the one that built the database. Here's what he had to say:

I can tell you outright that there is a grey version of this cart, just like there's a grey version of Shadowgate and a few other early GBC titles. There are manuals also in GB form, not GBC, on some of these as well. As you know, all of the black carts were originally slated for GB release, each postponed for the GBC. Some of the manufacturing of the GB manuals and carts must have taken place, which is why you'll find some of these oddities. I haven't, however, found a GB box for Shadowgate or G&W2, but it's possible they exist. No one ever thought there was a GB box for Super Breakout, which was an early GBC title. This was the most recent discovery AFAIK.

So you mean I'm not CRAZY?

YAY! (Dances Jig, while yodeling)

If I would have known it was a rarity, I would have bought it (wasn't that much if I recall). But I just didn't see the point, as I already owned the black cart (which is all the gray cart and more).

Thanks for this BTW. I was really itching to know.

well we've proven that such an oddity exists. As to whether you're crazy or not, that's best left for another thread and another day.

Hehe,
I'd protest that statement, but I have no proof to counter it.

And there WILL be other threads. I'll think of something else to cause a stir, just you wait...

--Edit--
Holy cow, there IS a Super Breakout grey cart:

Just had to add a reference to it. Never seen a Shadowgate grey-cart, but that's crazy too.

So why aren't these rarities referenced on official lists? That's what irks me.
