Black Metal doesn't appeal to me either, but I like when bands experiement with it like Kvelertak or Agalloch, and I seem to like some Cradle of Filth songs
Dark Tranquillity is pretty awesome stuff. Their latest album is actually quite good too (We Are The Void). You should try At The Gates (Gothenburg to the max), Be'lakor (Opeth-ish, less progressive), or Dissection sometime. All very stand-out melodic death metal.

Agalloch is one of my favourites. Very interesting band. Have you heard their new album, Marrow of the Spirit? Seems to be getting some mixed opinions, but generally positive reception. I for one think it's brilliant.

Dissection is more of a black metal band, but I'm sure Gamerforlife would enjoy them all the same, based on his tastes.

Yeah I guess you're right, I was thinking of their song Thorns of Crimson Death when I categorized them as such. When you think of the stuff off their first album, or Where Dead Angels Lie, they sound a lot more like a black metal band.

Still, the "melodic" bit is present. They're quite a different beast than, say, Mayhem or Burzum.

Is Into Eternity melodic death? Beats me, but I gotta say during that Dream Theater concert I was at, they were pretty damn fun. It was hilarious though because everytime the vocalist shrieked or screamed, I looked around and everyone just hated it. But those shrieks were the best part!

Speaking of, I'd say Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Santhanas and Burzum - Filosofem might be enjoyable for GamerForLife too, since they're pretty melodicish.

Marrow of the Spirit was pretty cool I think. I liked To Drown and Blake Lake Nidstang, both of which get extremely epic towards the end of the song. I love how they both build up to a satisfying climax. Sometimes I feel like Agalloch make some of their songs too long for their own good, but they usually hold my interest all the way through

I didn't love Dark Tranquillity's We are the Void on first listen but it has been growing on me. The Fatalist and Her Silent Language are two tracks I liked

I have heard some Into Eternity songs and really enjoyed them

At the Gates I am aware of, but really haven't explored their catalogue of songs that much. Dissection is a band I'll check out out of curiousity, along with some of AppleQueso's other mentions. Ack has me interested in that crazy Powerglove band now too LOL

Definitely look into Storm of the Light's Bane. Best album from them imo.

Plus it has that awesome artwork:

And on that Mayhem album, I'm gonna warn you right now that the vocals are very... different.

For those who are unfamiliar - Norwegian black metal back in the early 90's was no joke! Very similar to the American Gangsta Rap scene of around the same time..

Mayhem & Burzum were totally the black metal equivalent of Biggie & Tupac.. Just sayin..

So much attention gets put into the events surrounding those bands that it sometimes seems like people hardly pay any attention to the music itself.

Megadeth is really the only metal I listen to anymore.
