Yeah I'll admit I can't completely hate on the God of War games myself, 1-2 were fun, but 3 I didn't think was that great. The game was so heavily scripted I just didn't like that at all. Also call me crazy, but I seriously think Kratos is just straight up obnoxious and lame. He literally just comes off as a big baby to me, sure he's killing God's and all... but there's not really anything about him that I like or that makes me think he's badass. Am I alone on this? lol...
Ryger was really damn fun. But it's a pretty obscure ps2 title despite being a "re birth" title. And my god the dialogue was awful in that game. I still don't even completely understand the story.
After playing the 3rd god of war game Kratos character went in a really sad direction. In the first he was a tragic greek hero and I still feel there was quite a bit more potential to develop him then they did. There is nothing redeeming about him during the third and their attempts to were dissapointing. First, second, and the psp ones were better in that regard.

Nightshade was the one I played first. I actually only had a copy of the japanese version so I didn't even understand the story. I haven't completely finished shinobi so I don't know if it was as difficult, but that game was damn hard. I remember getting so into the tate system that I would restart boss fights just before killing them if I screwed it up. I think the combos system is brilliant in that series though. It is so intense and makes you feel so precise and efficient. I would like to see another entry.

Another awesome action game was Bujingai. It didn't rely on it as heavily as shinobi but some of the platforming worked in the same manner. You could run along walls and do a very short glide in the air. You could juggle enemies and launch them in the air where you could continue to do combos. Combining them allowed you to travel around without touching the ground.

Nice, so Nightshade had the "tate system" (that's the chain systems name?) thing too? Awesome to hear! I really need to pickup Shinobi again and that game someday. I've really been missing games like all this stuff we're talking about here lately, time to go back and play this older stuff again I guess!

I have never been able to find a north american copy of Nightshade (I think the jp version was Kunoichi?) but the games are fairly identical with a slight control change which I remember throwing me off when I got Shinobi. One of the differences I noticed in Shinobi was that your health drains over time which I don't remember from Nightshade. Also Nightshade is the sequal to Shinobi. You just don't play as the same character from the first game. I believe he's unlockable though.

Shinobi still pleasantly kicks my ass from time to time. Bujingai was great with the multiple combo system :)
