Re: Together Retro: Deja Vu
I just love this game. I originally bought it in 1990 or 1991 (pretty sure it was 1990)on the NES and beat it after a lot of trial and error. I've played through it maybe a half dozen times since, and this is a nice excuse to cruise through it again. I'll be playing it on my DS via an emulator (NES version) while sitting on the toilet.

Re: Together Retro: Deja Vu
Having looked it up, it seems the only unwinnable scenario might be the no money for the cab scenario noise came across. Deaths seem fairly easy to encounter though.
Starting right now
Edit: Progress so far - SPOILERS ahoy!

So I'm still early on, but i found the dead body and a secret room which had a medicine vial in the bin. Took me ages to figure out open worked on things other than doors, and even longer to figure to use it on my own coat and wallet.
Managed to find a casino too, and I gambled my coins and now have 38. Hopefully I won't be running out of cab fares any time soon.
Also managed to get arrested already, and also managed to walk off a cliff and die. oops.

Only played for a few minutes in free time at work, but I'm baffled that I wasn't taken with this game when I tried it before. Definitely looking forward to playing through this one.

Re: Together Retro: Deja Vu
So, I played this for 3 hours or so, and kinda....beat it.
It's certainly one of the easier adventure games I've played, and it was very short. I found the interface to be awkward and annoying, but i'll give it the benefit of a doubt for when it was made. That said, they could've streamlined it a bit for the GBC port.
The story wasn't very intriguing, you just started to learn about what was going on and then were basically told outright. Most of the puzzles I struggled with were more to do with figuring out the interface than anything else. The mugger who tries to rob you randomly on the street was very annoying too - if you spend your $20 note like I did (on something I didnt need EVER), the only way to excape him is to punch him. Doing that too many times gets you shot though, so i eventually got into the habit of saving whenever I needed to move along that street and resetting if I encountered him.
There were a lot of items that didnt have a lot of purpose too. I dont mind a few useless items or red herrings being thrown in, but it seemed like nearly everything in my inventory was useless to me.
Overall, I enjoyed this game well enough, it was playable and a fun enough way to pass an evening, but I don't think it's all that. It just feels a little too dated for my liking I'm afraid.
That said, I will work through the 2nd game to finish off the cartridge this month too. I imagine that won't take long either.

Re: Together Retro: Deja Vu
Just beat the first one...with an uncomfortable amount of help from a guide, especially near the end. I remember now why I haven't played adventure games like this in years - I'm awful at them
Was still a fun experience, but wasn't nearly as rewarding as it could have been. Going to try and really take my time playing through the second one so I don't run into the same issue again, but somehow I doubt that will happen...

Finished it (again)!
It was a good trip down nostalgia lane. I think I'll cruise through Shadowgate now.

Re: Together Retro: Deja Vu
Most adventure games are pretty short if you use a guide. I spent a few hours on it this weekend, I did resort to a guide but only when I forgot to "open" something I "examined". If something can be "opened" then it should really say so in the description when you "examine" it.
I only played up until I got to the taxi, then I started over and made sure I got everything I could. It's a good thing I did, I missed a lot of items. By the time I got back to the cabs and went somewhere, my brain was almost melted from the drugs. I'll have to start over at the beginning and take less time. I also spent a little time finding ways to die.
I've been playing the IIgs port, like I said. The art is a little better than the NES version. Not quite as high res as the Mac version, but there's color. I do spend a lot of time shifting windows around, but that's a weakness of the IIgs operating system. 320x200 display, and lots of space wasted on window decorations.
Since I'm starting over, I'm going to see if I can get this going on my Mac Classic. It's got a broken floppy, but there is floppy emulator software for the Mac OS. Hopefully it's just a matter of transferring an image over through serial.
