My First Arcade Port
I became a true gamer during the last console generation, meaning that it was the time when I really started to appreciate and pay attention to games. Unfortunately, I missed this sensibility during the previous console generations in my life. This means something very notable; I missed the era of arcades. I missed the feeling of being able to come to an arcade, play a game you haven't heard of before, then remembering it years later, and be able to get the home console version of the game. You know what I am talking about; that intangible sense of pride and nostalgia you get when you are able to play an old arcade game at home. Now that that time has passed, I thought that I had missed out on this forever. Fortunately, I recently realized that I actually already have. Here is some backstory: Every now and then, me and my Dad go to a bar/restaurant and have dinner. In that restaurant, the first time I had come there, there was a tiny, cheap countertop arcade minigame machine that, for the most part, had games that probably cost less to make than it cost for a single play. However, there was one game on the machine that I played every single time I came there. Perhaps you have heard of it; Luxor. Yeah, it was still a cheap-o casual game, but I loved it nonetheless, and it was probably the best thing on the machine. After a while, I eventually forgot about it, because we had a topped visiting that bar for a few years. Last Christmas, I was given an iPad as a present. I have been really enjoying it as a game system so far. Then, just recently, I saw that a sale was going on for certain iPad games in the App Store, and lo and behold, it turns out Luxor had been ported to iOS. I downloaded it on a whim, and about 10 minutes in playing it, I came to a realization: I was playing an arcade port. This is what it feels like to play a true arcade port. Luxor isn't even a particularly great game, but it was a game from my childhood, and now it was mine. And that is the story of my first arcade port.
Just thought I could share that with everyone.

A great story, an Arcade rediscovered and now played anytime!
Never heard of an Arcade Cab called Luxor, so now you got my curiosity. Are you talking about the ball match game on the PC and Mac? A link or screenshot of that Arcade?

For me its Mame and all the console Retro Collections. So many treasures that I can play again. Defender, Robotron, Omega Race and Tac Scan. Oh man, there are so many. Reactor, I would run on Mame just to hear the Quarter inserted music again.
Reactor Arcade - Wait for the Bass Guitar to kick in.

Yeah, that's the game. It is included on most iterations of the Megatouch arcade machine. I certainly wouldn't call it a cabinet, though. Here's one of the newer models:CRTGAMER wrote:A great story, an Arcade rediscovered and now played anytime!

Another cool thing about it is that because both versions use a touch screen, it was a perfect port, graphics, sound, AND controls!

Woa!
I have been in a cave too long, married with children. The only bar table top games I remembered were the card and lotto games.
From looking at that touch screen, I'm thinking it actually came out later then the PC version. Hmmm, not sure though.

Another similar game
Going backwards Popcap games came out with Zuma. Both Luxor and Zuma are actually inspired ball match games to an older Arcade game called Puzz Loop. I discovered this one at a Retro Arcade and have since acquired the PS1 version. Give it a shot, it is also emulated by Mame with a hidden secret Spinner Menu. One of the games that work great with my Spinner Mod.
