I have always loved RPG games on the snes. Recently, I have been purchasing more and more super famicom games for my collection. What frustrates me more than anything else is the fact that it is super easy to get a patched translation for a ROM but it is usually pretty difficult to find a straight up translation guide / walkthrough to help non Japanese players complete the game. I know gamefaqs.com has SOME walkthroughs, but seldom do these walkthroughs actually help you understand what is actually going on.
Does anybody on here know of any other websites that might help an english speaker understand japanese games? I think that would make for a very awesome series of articles here on racketboy.
On a side note, does anyone have any recommendations for super famicom games that do not require you to know japanese? I like obscure titles as well as popular ones. However, I am preferably looking for games that aren't super expensive or hard to find. Any suggestions, comments, or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
Super Famicom RPG imports
Re: Super Famicom RPG imports
Honestly you could maybe give GameFAQ's a shot for some guides on some of these rare gems, just check some game pages to see if they have any FAQ's for this kind of thing. Seiken Densetsu 3 even still has somewhat of an active community, and I see two large Translation Guides listed under the FAQ's.
Re: Super Famicom RPG imports
Thanks for the reply.
GameFAQs is awesome and I am aware that they have some translation guides. I just find it odd that theres a 90% translated ROM for Dragon Quest VI yet very few translation guides are available for those who actually own the game. I do not know alot about ROM hacking, but I have to imagine that before you hack the rom you would need a translated script? I wonder why the people who hack these roms choose not to make the raw translations available to people who actually own the game.
Seiken Densetsu 3 looks awesome, I really want to get this game. Has anyone played this game (actual super famicom cart, not a translated rom) with any success using the guides? I probably will get the game regardless, I am just curious to see if its possible to play these games without understanding the story. I would imagine that Seiken Densetsu 3 would be easier than drag quest, as if I recall the format is very picture oriented rather than text oriented. For example, in Dragon Quest it would be very difficult to tell the difference betewen a potion and armor, whereas with Seiken Densetsu 3 I'd imagine it would be much easier.

Why not just get repros of the ones you're most interested in? Then you can play on original hardware, and have the benefit of English text. Probably comes out about even price wise, too.
Re: Super Famicom RPG imports
Not really. Most repros are $30-60, most normal imports are about $10-20. It is a significant difference in cost.irixith wrote: Probably comes out about even price wise, too.

Depending on how many imports OP wants, a powerpak may eventually pay for itself.Retrozoa wrote:Not really. Most repros are $30-60, most normal imports are about $10-20. It is a significant difference in cost.irixith wrote: Probably comes out about even price wise, too.

This thread has a great list of SFC games that don't require Japanese knowledge. There are some pricey ones but a lot of them are affordable.

THIS thread also has a great list of SFC carts that do not require japanese, and when not exclusive, are cheaper than their US counterparts.

Even though I am a collector and like owning the original carts, boxes, manuals, etc... I like the flash cart idea somebody had suggested. The PowerPak is a bit pricey but if its high quality it may be worth it....Not just for playing translated roms but for playing rarer games without having to disrupt their packaging as well.
Does anybody here have any experience with those? How is the gameplay/sound? Are there any alternative products out there? Sorry for asking so many questions, I just recently got into SNES/SFC collecting as I am taking a break with collecting genesis at the moment.
