At that point it becomes easier and much faster to use cards (i think it was through Quetzalcoatl's Card Mod ability) for obtaining plenty of junction magic instead of the damn drawing. I haven't played the game in years, but I believe if you don't make an effort to level all of your characters the ones left out of your party can become severely under-leveled by disc 4. Oh, and many places become unreachable when you start disc 4, so there's some side-quests that must be completed before that iirc.
Re: After nearly 13 years...,
Grind on the Heaven and Hell island(s?) a bit to stack up on some of the best cards if you want to become nearly invincible. I remember having a setup where my characters absorbed 100% of every element in the game. 7-8 were far too easy to break... lol.
Re: After nearly 13 years...,
Final Fantasy VIII is easily breakable, but that's what makes it so fun for me.
You have to do all the sidequests and make everything you want to make on disc 3. Disc 4 is basically just Ultimecia Castle, all other places are closed, you might as well not bother trying to figure out what you can do after getting there.
Anyway. If you want to get the best cards, don't spread the rules all over the world. They get progressively more complicated. When you challenge someone, always cancel when they first propose their rules. Eventually they'll accept to play by your rules. Your rules should be Balamb's, the simpler ones. I think the only place in which you absolutely don't have a choice but to play with with the opponent's rules is in space, and, if memory doesn't fail me, you get Alexander's card there with Piet.
(Worth noting: if you want to have fun with Triple Triad, and it is one of the best mini-games ever, you should definitely spread most rules, except Random.)
You'll want to get at least Gilgamesh's and Laguna's cards. They can be refined to 10 Holy Wars and 100 Hero, respectively. They're the most useful items in the game. You should also get 100 LuvLuvG by refining Chubby Chocobo's card. It increases the affinity between a character and all the GFs. There should be plenty of guides on how to acquire them all over the internet.
The most useful GFs are Doomtrain and Eden. Doomtrain causes all status ailments possible and Eden is the only GF (besides Chocobo, which isn't really that powerful) that can break the 9,999 damage wall. Eden's attacks can cause 30,000 damage if boosted to 255 with a character properly junctioned.
Doomtrain is the most difficult GF to get, because you have to fight Malboros and get six of their tentacles plus two other items (you can look them up). Malboros almost always use Bad Breath as their first attack. So you have to protect yourself with ST-Def-Jx4 and junction Confusion, Berserk, Sleep at least. Also, equipping Initiative helps, since you'll have a turn before it uses the attack. You can use Quistis's Degenerator for an instant kill, or pray for Odin to appear and insta-kill him.
If you're playing the PC version, there's an item called Ribbon that you can get playing Chocobo World (the Pocketstation game). It protects you from all status ailments, so fighting Malboros should be trivial. Chocobo World is quite dull, however.
As other people mentioned, you should level up your characters at Island Closest to Heaven and Hell, that located are on the sides of the map. Heaven's monsters are slightly weaker than Hell's. There are numerous hidden draw points on those islands also, so you might want to use Diablos's EncNone ability to just go there and not worry about battling a Ruby Dragon. Yes, it will kill you often.
If you need AP, Cactuar Island gives you 20 per Cactuar killed. Remember that Squall has awesome aim and go nuts.
Finally, once you've done all the refining of cards, items and magic you need, you should make your GFs forget the useless abilities and teach them stuff like ST-Def-Jx4, Elem-Def-Jx4, and ST-Atk-J. Only Cactuar has Luck-J, so you'll have to teach it to one more. Not all the junctions will be available with your normally learned techniques, so you might have to teach them to your GFs so that you can junction on all your stats with three characters. Not that it is all that useful, but I loved making my characters God-like. You'll only need to junction nicely three of your characters. While Ultimecia's Castle requires you to divide your team, you can transfer your junctions automatically between one and the other.
Shit, this is long.

Honestly, the Junction and card refining system is so broken that the game can be easily beaten with a single character. I kept Squall at lowish health and spammed my Limits on enemies, thanks to the system that changing the active character (which goes back to Squall with one person alive) causes it to reroll whether or not you can limit.

Re: After nearly 13 years...,
I have been playing Triple Triad and then refining all but my character cards. Thanks to that I upgraded all my squads gear. I think I'll save the bulk of the sidequests for a little later. What's the Point of no Return?
Also, I'm about to head to the orphanage.

Re: After nearly 13 years...,
Yeah, you end up doing yourself a major disservice if you grind a ton early in the game (as I did for my first run back in the day, but it was still easy to beat). Since the enemies level up with you and will start dishing out a lot of magic you don't even have access too yet. I've talked to several people that make the game sound even 10x easier if you go through the whole thing with really low levels.MrPopo wrote:Honestly, the Junction and card refining system is so broken that the game can be easily beaten with a single character. Re: After nearly 13 years...,
Disc 3!!! I'm doing it! Farther than I ever made it before!
Re: After nearly 13 years...,
All of the FF games past 4 are insanely breakable. If anything it kind of adds to the fun factor though, in a way.
