Okay, I posted this on Gamefaqs, but don't expect much response there.
This has been bugging me lately.
I swear (95% sure) that I once saw a GB version of Game & Watch Gallery 2 for original Game Boy (grey cart, not black). I'm looking for more info about its existence and if it does, why there is no info on the various gameboy databases about it. Also looking for a legit pic of the game cart (I believe it should have a Super Gameboy logo on the sticker as well). So far, my searches on ebay and google have been unsuccessful).
However, I did notice a few auctions on ebay that contain a manual for an original gameboy version (no color logo).
The wikipedia article on the series also claims that 2 versions were released in the US (one SGB and one for GBC).
Also, there is a US rom of the game, which is definitely not a Gameboy Color version. It can't be from another region either, since (correct me if wrong) only the US version used the "Game & Watch Gallery" title.
So anybody know? (and if anyone has this version, please post a pic of it somewhere, it'll be the only one on the net, I think).
Game & Watch Gallery 2 on GB? (not GBC)

Re: Game & Watch Gallery 2 on GB? (not GBC)
I have the original gameboy game & watch gallery 1 and 2. the original was GB grey cart. the G & W 2 gb color cartridge is black. you could play G & W 2 on the original gb with black and white (green interface). Must be a bootleg version.

Yeah G&W2 was not released as an original GB cart except in Japan.
Re: Game & Watch Gallery 2 on GB? (not GBC)
**Sigh**
Ever had one of those times that you swear you remember something, but can't find any evidence to verify it?
I even remember thinking "hmm, I didn't know this came in a grey cart, but I guess I wanted the color version anyway". and even remember noting the Super gameboy logo on the cart. I even remember what store I was in (Bookman's). Just seems like a lot of detail for something that apparently doesn't exist.
I still say there's some evidence though (even if it's still doubtful):
There's a rom with this name "Game & Watch Gallery 2 (U) .gb"
Where
U= US release
S=Super Gameboy game
gb= for original gameboy
If it is a bootleg cart, that's absolutely weird. Why would anyone remove GBC support but leave the SGB stuff. It's got to be the only time it's ever happened, and there's no real reason for it since the GBC version just does everything that does anyways (GB and SGB compatible).
Wikipedia (which I know is not always 100% accurate) says:
"It was first developed by Nintendo and originally released in 1997 in Japan, and 1998 in the US for the Game Boy and later released on November 1, 1998 for the Game Boy Color."
Where would they get that idea I wonder? (not sarcasm, a serious curiosity).
And is this the only black GBC game to come with a standard gameboy manual (no "color" logo).
I'm still suspicious and will continue to search for it. If I ever find more, I'll be sure to post it here. If I'm right (and not crazy), it may just be incredibly rare. I just can't let this go yet.
But I totally recognize that there's no conclusive proof on my end (just suspicions and memory from 2 years ago).
Noiseredux, you must think I'm totally nuts; I have a poor track record here so far.

Re: Game & Watch Gallery 2 on GB? (not GBC)
haha, listen -- Dain who runs NintendoAge has every single GB game CIB. He's spent serious YEARS proving which games were and were not released. He says that Gallery 2 was NOT a GB release (in the US). I believe what Dain tells me. He's fucking hardcore about that kind of thing.
As I said, it was released in Japan on GB though.
I can't find ANY proof otherwise. And like you conceded, a ROM title and a wiki entry really don't hold much weight.

Re: Game & Watch Gallery 2 on GB? (not GBC)
on the back of the box it says super gameboy compatible. I remember when my cousin got Pokemon crystal and the cart was grey and could not save his game at all. The bootleg version (box include) he had was well made to fool someone. There was a lot of bootleg games in the late 90s and 2000s for gameboy.
When I was younger playing super street fighter 2 turbo Sega Genesis game. I thought you could pull off this secret trick in "Zangief stage". The trick was to pull down the lever to drop the chain on Zangief. I thought I did it, but it never happened... sometimes I believe it when I'm playing that stage. I can beat Zangief now these, not difficult as it was back then. It never hurts to ask capcom if its true or not. I never told this rumor to anyone except for my cousin. Sort of true in Mortal Kombat 2 stage the one with toxic river. You have to stand on a certain area to drop your opponent into the green toxic. Which is true

Re: Game & Watch Gallery 2 on GB? (not GBC)
yeah a few months back Chris Leach had a gray cart of 1945. It was very convincing. But totally a bootleg.

1942 you mean?noiseredux wrote:yeah a few months back Chris Leach had a gray cart of 1945. It was very convincing. But totally a bootleg.
Assuming I must be wrong, I attribute my memory to combining a couple things that I may have been looking at at the time. I'm positive that I was musing at at least one gameboy game that surprised me as a grey cart (like Warioland II for instance, which is available in both black and grey).
So let's conclude that it doesn't exist. That's fine, case closed.
But I would like to address the strangeness of the rom I have:
It's not just the rom's title, it actually has the attributes of a grey cart SGB game when played in an emulator, different from the GBC rom (I won't explain them unless I need to, a Gameboy enthusiast would already know).noiseredux wrote:As I said, it was released in Japan on GB though.

And it's all in English. The Japan version is not and even has a different title screen if I'm not mistaken.
Can't be the Austrailian release either because it had a different title screen as well (simply "Game Boy Gallery 3", no "& watch" (and yes, it 's apparently the 3rd game there, not the 2nd).
It just boggles my mind why it exists, that's all. There's no beneficial reason to altering the rom at all. The GBC one already works as a Super Gameboy and regular GB game. Was somebody that hard up to play the game with a custom 4-color scheme?

Yes, typo. He had a gray bootleg of the GBC game 1942. Very strange.nightrnr wrote: 1942 you mean?
as far as the ROM goes... I just don't know man. It's weird. I'm just saying I've got no proof of it existing. The ROM maybe proves that it was developed in b/w. Maybe a prototype exists. But as far as actually available legitimately in a store like you mention... I have no proof.
Yes, Wario Land II existed both ways. As did Centipede. And a few others. But I have no reason to believe that G&WG2 did.
(btw, I dont think yr nuts. At all. This is the kind of shit I obsess about as well. Haha)
Re: Game & Watch Gallery 2 on GB? (not GBC)
See, that I understand. 1942 is GBC only (clear cart). It makes sense to make a GB compatible one to me.noiseredux wrote:Yes, typo. He had a gray bootleg of the GBC game 1942. Very strange.nightrnr wrote: 1942 you mean?
But I guess you could find other strange roms out there. G&WG2 just happens to be the one I notice.
