The Best Zelda Alternatives (clones included)

Post by marurun »

This is an article idea I've been rolling around. I'd need help putting it together because I haven't played all the games I think are worthy of listing.

Edit: Let me clarify. In the style of Zelda (NES) and Link to the Past (SNES). That classic Zelda feel. No 3D.

Here are some alternatives I've identified already:

Crystalis
Neutopia 1
Neutopia 2
Crusader of Centy
Golden Axe Warrior
Defenders of Oasis
Beyond Oasis
Legend of Oasis

Any other thoughts on alternatives or critiques of this list so far?

I've heard the StarTropics games being compared to early Zeldas.

Hmmm.... maybe...

Alundra
Golvelius
Gunple: Gunman's Proof

These feel very "Zeldaish" to me, but I don't know if you could call them clones or not...

Soul Blazer
Illusion of Gaia
Terranigma

Where the hell is "LandStalker"?

now that is a good game... the guys behind Alundra were originally from Climax who made LandStalker.

They also did "LadyStalker" on the SNES which plays similar to LandStalker. The other games in the Stalker series (Time Stalkers, Dark Savior...) don't play the same way, they are still action/adventure, but not very zeldaish... especially Time Stalkers... oh God was that a bad game!

landstalker is kinda similar to zelda only isometric. kinda like the game "young merlin" on snes.

also raztat, off the top of my head:
crystalis (nes, gbc)
neutopia 1 & 2 (tg16)
crusader of centy (genesis)
beyond oasis (genesis)
legend of oasis (saturn)

and i think golden axe warrior and defenders of oasis are game gear games? i'm not sure on those.

I remember God of Thunder on the PC. It's free now, as well.

I'm not sure I'd class Landstalker (or it's Treasure-made "cousin", Light Crusader) as a Zelda clone. The isometric action-adventure platformer is a very different beast. A fun beast, but a bit out of the scope of the original question, I think.
