I voted for DQ VIII, as it is o'skool as it can be.

Persona on PSP is like a revisit to the earlier days of the Persona series, as there is no Social Link system in place, but you do have multiple characters that may or may not join you.

DQ9, haven't played it, but from those who have it, they say the game was specifically designed for multi-player, you can still play by yourself, but you will feel something is missing.

Radiant Historia, not in my collection, still on my radar for later purchase.

Dragon Quest XI and VIII are both long. XI plays similar to DQ III, in that characterization is pretty weak due to your characters being player created. Persona I believe is also long. As for Radiant Historia, I'm currently in the middle of it and it's a step up from old school; the battle system has a lot to do with turn and position manipulation, not to mention the time travel mechanic which is less Chrono Trigger and more Terminator (need to undo a mistake in the past).

Personally, if you're looking for old school I'd recommend one of the following:

Etrian Odyssey series - Another series based off of Wizardry, with a deep character customization and very approachable mechanics. If you like planning out a party for maximum synergy this game is for you. And there's something satisfying about drawing your map on the lower screen.

Dragon Quest IV-VI - Not as long as the other two DQ games you listed, and like all DQ games there's a ton of familiar elements.

Golden Sun Dark Dawn - Some puzzles and a lot of turn based combat. I'm sure you've played the first two.

SMT: Strange Journey - Demon fusion and a sci-fi story in a dungeon crawler which really makes you work at overcoming the challenges.

Huh I didn't know Dragon Quest XI was out yet. Hell I didn't even know Dragon Quest X was out yet either. I must have been asleep longer than I thought!

I have REALLY got to get around to playing that. I'll consider trying out Crimson Gem Saga; that sounds right up my alley, but I will definitely keep hearing suggestions.

Gave up on FES? I thought the new challenges were refreshening enough that I'm enjoying playing through. Since there's no more demonic compendium, there's a lot more turnover in my party which keeps it interesting. Since there's no down elevator before the boss, it keeps you on your toes conserving power.

I'm on the last door now, and there's been very little story so far. So if that's the pull, I can see why you'd skip it. But the battles are fun, and I'll finish it up soon. Then I'll be in the same boat you are.

DQ 8 & 9 are both great old school games. I prefer the story in 8 tho. If you haven't, play DQ 4, 5 or 6 instead since they all have great stories and are very old school. You could also pick up some ports of old school games that you haven't played yet (if you haven't). The Breath of Fire games on the GBA are good, as is Phantasy Star Collection (which gets my vote). I really haven't played much on the DS besides FF2 & 3 and the DQ games, so yeah.
I have a ton of games listed at my store's site: Super Smash Video Games

I think I will take a brief break from RPGs for now, and finish Ghost Trick. I have been wanting to play that one for a while. I think after that, I will try and tackle Dragon Quest IX, followed by the DS port of Chrono Trigger. Gotta love the DS.

Look up Nostalgia for the DS.

It's kinda like Skies of Arcadia.
