No question about it, get a Fat. As Ziggy pointed out, for the hard drive convenience. Read thru my guide to see why this is the best feature of the PS2.
The right moment
It is the perfect time to stock up on PS2 games. there are so many titles used and inexpensive at Gamestop. In this era of controlled hard drive downloads, the PS2 is the perfect hard drive install with discs that do not need online authentication.

2. I know there are millions of to 10 list etc out there but what five games would you guys/girls personally buy first?
God Hand
Mr. Mosquito
Gitaroo Man
Katamari Damacy
Killer 7
If you can only buy 5 games, you should buy these 5 because your collection will have instant personality. It's the kind of collection that says "Hi. I'm a strange person with good taste in games."
If I could only pick five of my PS2 games to keep, they would be:
God of War
Shadow of the Colossus
Katamari Damacy
The Red Star
Blitz:The League (but I'm probably the only one in the world to put that in my top 5 PS2 games)
My personal top 5 essential PS2 games in no particular order...
God Hand (If you like action games with humor and general wacky fun) Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence (If you like third person shooters, stealth games, or if you just enjoy any game with an amazing story.) Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 (If you like JRPG's or just any game with an amazing story) Resident Evil 4 (If you like third person shooters or survival horror) Shadow of the Colossus (If you like games and/or life in general)
Honourable mentions...
Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening - Special Edition (If you like action games that are more serious) Silent Hill 2 (I've never actually played this one myself as I'm a complete pussy but it's pretty much unanimously agreed across the internet that this is one of the best survival horror games of all time) Kingdom Hearts (If you like JRPG's with real time combat and lots of cutesy Disney characters)
As for what system type to get I can't really help you. I don't know the specifics myself. But I hope I've made the decision of which games to get a bit easier.
I feel old when talking to anyone my age yet too inexperienced to effectively talk to anyone older. Life is grand that way.
God Hand is such a hard game. I never got the hang of it. And I'm not terribly crap at third person action games (I beat God of War 1 and 2 in God and Titan Modes, for example). I guess I just can't wrap my head around the mechanics.
