PS2 advice

After getting back into gaming a year or two ago I have decided its time to buy a PS2, I love my OG Xbox but there are just to many great games that are easy to find on the PS2 to pass up, plus you get the bonus of PS1 games. I have a couple of questions

1. Which version is the best option, I assume there all backwards compatible?

2. I know there are millions of to 10 list etc out there but what five games would you guys/girls personally buy first?

Which model to get is a pretty hard question to answer. You have two main options: The fat or the slim. Then after you decide that, it's best to research all the revisions to those models and choose which one you think is best. I mean, you don't HAVE to, but some of the revisions can be important. For example, Free MCboot no longer works on the latest revisions of the slim.

What's important to note about the fat versions is that you can get a network adapter and hard drive for it, then install and play games from the hard drive. Using this method saves wear and tear from the optical drive as well as load games much faster. With the slim, you really don't have this option. You can use a USB hard drive, but there's a speed issue with some games.

also some games won't work in some models. For instance the slim cannot play FFXI since there's no HDD. It also has trouble reading certain discs, the US version of Puzzle Fighter for PS1 for instance. The fat has its own list of trouble discs. The wiki links Ziggy posted will get you to those lists.

Oh, I forgot to mention a few games I like lol. The first two games I bought for my PS2 were Agent Under Fire and GTA3. Didn't have a lot of money back then, GTA3 lasted me a LONG time, as will pretty much any GTA game. 3, Vice City, San Andreas, you really can't go wrong with any of these. The two GTA's ported from the PSP aren't too hot, they're alright but I wouldn't recommend them over the others.

A game I recently experienced for the first time, and has become maybe my favorite PS2 game: Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. Such a great game, I had to play through it a second time immediately after I beat it. I may play through it again soon.

Being a huge fan of MKII, I really enjoyed Shoalin Monks. Other than that, up until recently the majority of my PS2 collection has been FPS or driving/racing, I wont bother talking about obvious FPS games. FF12 was a great game, outside the FPS or driving genres. I've only recently started to venture outside this realm.

When I get back later I'll post some awesome multi player experiences I've had.

Vice City was the best of the GTA3 engine games. You should also check out The Red Star and Gradius V. Also, any of the SMT games.

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions, I think I will go with the Fat model as I like the idea of getting a hard drive, I'm tempted by a silver one I have just seen on eBay local pick so I will be able to test it out.

If you're interested in wireless controllers I suggest picking up a Katana.



It is similar to the official PS2 controller in shape, has solid buttons, and a great D-Pad.

the Logitech wireless is also great, though a little harder to find and doesn't look like a standard PS2 controller.
