I recently turned 20 and pretty much everyone got me App store gift cards. I've had an iPhone 4 for a short while and every app i got was really bad, or was ok but got boring after 1 go. I now have far to much credit which i cna only spend in the app store (no music for me) and i dont know what to get.
Apps i like so far are:
COD Nazi Zombies - Great fun with mates or online
Dungeon hunter 2 - Real basic but sometimes thats what i need
Crash Nitro Kart 2 - Just like CTR but only 50p
Hockey Nations 2011 - Awesome game but no music or commentary really sucks
Shmup - Great game but after the first level or to it gets far to cheap with off screen bullets
DoDonPachi Ressurection - Awesome
Espgaluda 2 - Awesome
I would have thought FPS would be great on the iPhone but the controlls to them all are horrible. Massive auto aim and the fact that you cant maually aim and shoot at the same time lets the genre down. Shmups work great but to be honest i doubt anything will beat the cave ones i own. Apart from crash nitro kart most racing games are simply press the left, then the right and dull me senseless. As for games like angry birds and doodle jump, i dont get what the fuss is about. Their incredibly easy and for me really arn't addictive.
There are thousands of apps out there and im sure there are some real gems, but it seems like im searching through mounds of crap to find them. Any suggestions?

If you like Risk, Lux DLX 2 is an excellent take on it. All maps are available for free after purchase, and it supports up to six people playing on one iDevice.

Re: iPhone apps
Get the turbografx16 and c64 emulators. The c64 is kinda pricey at $3 for just the app, and more for in-app purchases. However, there is about 20 free games. The turbografx16 app is free, with only a few games yet (it was released recently) at $3 each. I would also recommend Game Dev Story and Metal Wars 2, which were both incredibly fun for a short while. Metal Wars is badly translated and short, but is still pretty addicting. Mega Man II is good as well. I also have Doom, Doom 2 RPG, Wolfenstein 3d, and Wolfenstein RPG. Wolfenstein RPG and Doom are must-buys. Wolfenstein 3d is good if you liked the original. Doom 2 RPG was absolutely horrible.
Black DSi, Pink GBC, Softmodded Wii, Softmodded Fat Ps2, Black Gamecube, Xbox, Dreamcast, Ps1 Slim, Atomic Purple GBC, Onyx GBA SP, Gears of War 3 Edition Xbox 360 Slim, PSP 3000, NES.

Get Hookchamp. I'll say it until you get it.
You should also check out Hook Worlds. The sorta sequel to Hookchamp. Its good, but its definitely different.
As far as FPS games on the iOS. The only ones that I've ever found to be all that good is N.O.V.A and the port of Doom.

Older. Not wiser.
