Ono wants to make a new Darkstalkers

Post by noiseredux »

copypasta:

Darkstalkers fans have long been asking for a new entry in the fighting game franchise. It's not hard to understand their appeals, too. After all, there hasn't been a new, full-fledged Darkstalkers game since 1997.

They're not alone in this, too. Even Street Fighter series producer Yoshinori Ono has said before that he's "desperate" to make a new Darkstalkers game. So fans are making noise outside Capcom while Ono's doing it inside the company. The noise would have to be a lot louder than it is now for Capcom executives to take notice, however.

Ono recently told gaming news site Eurogamer that fan requests for a new Darkstalkers game has reached the 100,000 mark, but it's still a long way from the one million that he says Capcom's top executives are looking for.

"At the moment in Capcom's statistics, I've heard it's [the number of requests] gone over 100,000," he commented. "But it's far from a million. We need to keep on going."

"One day, if it goes half a million, Capcom may raise its eyebrow a little bit and I could do what I did in London in 2007 when I announced the comeback of Street Fighter," Ono continued. "In the near future, with your help, it may become true. It's on its way, because we're pretty much where we were with Street Fighter a few years back. So keep it up."

Even if a new game in the series does get the go signal, it may take a while before it comes out. Capcom currently has its hands full with the upcoming Street Fighter X Tekken and a bunch of other fighting game releases including a rumored console port of Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition.

I don't think they should make a new one. There's no way it would live up to the old games. It probably wouldn't even have sprite-based graphics, a staple of the series.

Not only that, but I also think that it would end up cannibalizing Capcom's other fighting games on the market. Besides BlazBlue, there's really no competition to Capcom in the 2D fighting arena. They would be cutting their own sales with a new Darkstalkers, which would be a major risk to undertake.

Then again, Mega Man Legends 3 seems to be happening (although it isn't green lit yet).

It might happen. Capcom's track record with old franchises lately has been strong - they definitely had better success with Megaman 9 than they did Bionic Commando.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Unless they made it for PSP, 3DS or just PSN, XBL, etc I doubt we'd see it remain sprite-based. Of course, its sprites are a staple to the series the same way they were to Street Fighter, and if they made a Darkstalkers that was similar to MvC3 or SFIV, I'd be okay with that.

I say yes to this idea.

I agree with jfrost. They already have enough of their own titles bouncing around in the 2D fighter market, they don't really need a new Darkstalkers.

It would be hard to market it to newcomers as well, it's a somewhat obscure franchise to anyone that's not an avid fighting game fan. I don't think the game would look very good in 2.5D form either (I'm not even a fan of SFIV having 3D models.) Putting an "HD remix" with online capabilities (like they're allegedly doing for SFIII) of Night Warriors or Vampire Savior on PSN/XBLA would be a much better idea.

Isn't it not only green lit, but well under development?

Quoted for truth. Hell, I'd settle for a PSN release of Project Justice.

I think a Darkstalkers would be cool if it came out when the hype of MvC3 and SF4 died down.

And maybe even a game that is Capcom Fighting Jam done right using a MvC3/TvC style

Mega Man Legends 3 is currently under development, not a question of if it is coming out but when.
