Deleting digital games

Is the same true for XBLA? My HDD is about 1/2 full and I anticipate at some point it will be very near full. I'd want to make sure I can re-download if I had to delete anything.

This is true, but for obvious reasons it's always best to have backup. Some games can be pulled from iTunes which you then won't be able to download again. I believe Edge was one game that had this happen.

Actually you still can, you just have to message iTunes customer support or look at your purchase history and re-download it from there.

When they delete something from any digital store they're only removing access for new purchases. If you've already bought it then you legally own it and they're required to provide a download of it for you in the future should you need it.

In other words you can still get music, games and apps from any online digital content source if they're removed from a digital storefront. The only people that won't ever have a shot at them or a chance to get removed items are people looking to buy the stuff after the fact.

This actually is not true in the music department -- you can only ever download your songs from iTunes once, due to the arrangement they have where they have to pay the royalty on each download, as opposed to each purchase. It is YOUR responsibility to backup those purchases.

There is a fallback whereby if you lose all of your songs due to a hard drive failure, they can activate a one time option for you to re-download everything, but you're at the whim of iTunes Support -- not all requests are approved.

Thank goodness that in the digital game space, iTunes doesn't set the standard.

Ah, my bad. I was applying my experience with Amazon, Sony and MS for their online retail policies they're always simple to deal with if you were to swap systems and the like.

I would hope you could redownload anything you already purchased without having to pay again.

I hope this isn't too off topic but I believe the same goes for Wii Virtual Console and Wiiware games. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

You can delete and re-download all of your VC/WiiWare at any time. But if your Wii breaks or you format it and you cannot access your puchases it has to be sent to Nintendo for repair. I believe the same applies to getting a new Wii, you would have to send one or both consoles to Nintendo to transfer the licenses. So this could be expensive.
I've got an obscene amount of VC games, so I hope they have some kind of no cost license migration solution worked out between the Wii and the next console, assuming it will have a VC.

I wouldn't hold your breath. Controlled Digital Downloads are convenient, but eventually support may drop on the older console as a newer system takes it place. A disc will last a lot longer and can be reinstalled LOCALLY on the original Console whenever necessary.

A purchased Ubisoft game I can install to the internal Hard Drive without online authentication, Bah Wa Ha Ha Ha! I love the PS2!

The day I found out that you couldn't transfer purchases from the Shop Channel to another Wii was the day I stopped buying VC/WiiWare titles. Until Nintendo implements a system where I can transfer my purchases I will never buy anything from their store again.

Almost the same, I had to buy the extra levels for Bubble Bobble.
