Thread's been well answered by all posters here already.
Here's my short-list of ARPGs (listed mostly-action first since that's what I like):

Guardian Heroes - more a brawler, but still highly recommended.

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance - I was obsessed with this game when I first got it right up until I beat it. Kinda Diablo 2 type game play with lots of weapon and armor upgrades, loot to grab and sell and a well balanced slightly-easy skew so the grinding is very minimal-to-none until the last few levels at the default difficulty.

Scurge: Hive - I got over half-way through before it started getting repetitive but still a very well-made game and I loved every minute of it. PM me for a great deal CIB.

Zelda: LTTP + 4 Swords - I've played through it 4 times on various GBA models and it was awesome every time. If you have a flashcart I almost finished a vocal-cut/sound restoration patch a while back. I tried really hard to like Minish cap and did have some fun but I give it a "meh".

Bomberman Tournament - Zelda + Bomberman. Awesome.

Mother 3 - If you have a flashcart, this is what you want.

Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon - Google some reviews. Turn-based but awesome.

Sigma Star Saga - wait, is this a shmpup? Been awhile since I played it. I think I need to play it tomorrow.

Sword of Mana - It's not Secret of Mana, FFA, or SD3, but it's beautiful. I didn't give it a fair chance, but I really couldn't get into it.

Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones - Reviews say I should've played it years ago (95% say 9/10). I haven't but it's high on my ever-growing list of games to play.

Homebrew:

Anguna - Beautiful, well-built, short, Zelda-clone. Judging by your OP, this is a good reason to invest in a $29 EZ Flash IV from 0shippingzone.

Powder - If you like, or have ever considered getting into roguelikes, this is the game to try (I hear Pokemon Mystery Dungeon's worth a try too)

What's Crimson Gem Saga?

Thanks for all the suggestion we seem to have similar taste in games.
