Sony was. Now they're just saying "Ok dudes -- make whatever you want!" Which is kind of awesome. Although I haven't heard much come of that.Hatta wrote: What was stopping people from publishing unapproved games before?
Do you think UMD will become an open format?

I don't understand how you get from "SCEE has ceased the approvals process " to "Ok dudes -- make whatever you want!" Ceasing the approvals process would seem to me to be a move to kill the PS2, not open it up.

they (Sony) are no longer making it mandatory that they (Sony) approve any new PS2 game. A PS2 game can now be published WITHOUT the approval of Sony. So in other words... "ok dudes -- make whatever you want!"Hatta wrote:I don't understand how you get from "SCEE has ceased the approvals process " to "Ok dudes -- make whatever you want!" The process works by Sony having a standard set of rules in place for quality and all around playability for games on the system. Now they've dropped it and are letting anyone publish anything.noiseredux wrote:they (Sony) are no longer making it mandatory that they (Sony) approve any new PS2 game. The problem is publishing stuff for any active system still involves licensing costs that are quite large no matter what.

Ok, it's just a weird way to say it.

Re: Do you think UMD will become an open format?
I saw that PS2 news a while back and was hoping it would extend the PS2 lifespan a little longer. Somewhat like the indy scene the Dreamcast has enjoyed for years. So far nothing....
As for PSP, I always thought it was cool to have movies and games on tiny discs and was thinking maybe they would put music albums on them too someday. Remember back when 80's and 90's movies portrayed movies, music, ect in the future, it was always tiny optical discs? However it looks like the massive popularity and affordability of flash media that is rewritable (unlike UMDs) seems to be the future.

they did do that somewhat. Beck's Guero was one.Purkeynator wrote:As for PSP, I always thought it was cool to have movies and games on tiny discs and was thinking maybe they would put music albums on them too someday. I doubt UMD will go anywhere. If even the most hardcore of "professional" pirates have failed to or won't bother creating optical discs readable by a PSP, there's no way Sony would allow writers and blank media. It's a (presumably) fiercely guarded proprietary format. I'm not aware of one successful attempt to date of any PSP unit ever accessing data from a not-Sony-pressed disc.
Lum fan.
