To whomever has done this, hopefully you can help me. Ordered a new 500GB HDD to replace my 80GB drive. But i have a few questions.
1. I know some of the PS3 game saves are protected. If i do a full backup of the PS3, will those game saves get backed up for my new HDD or are they lost forever? I am pretty sure if i just do a manual save that it wont work.
2. Do game downloads get backed up also or do I have to redownload them?
3. What about PS3 game data that is loaded into hdd from the bluray that is sometimes loaded on there, upon first playing some games?

You still have to use the (practically broken) Trophy Sync if you want to 'backup' your trophies though. I've had that fail so many times it's ridiculous. I just don't bother with those fucking things any more. Not since you can just unlock them as and when with a tool. Completely pointless.

No need to do a full format if it's a new drive. Just choose the quick option. Took 10 minutes on my 500GB.AznKhmerBoi wrote:PS: Formatting a 250GB took 16 hours on the PS3 so ihope you have patients.

Re: PS3 HDD upgrade questions
Got my new 500GB hard drive, and i backed up the 80GB...so i am ready to go. I put in the new 500GB into the PS3, and turn it on and it says that it needs to be formatted so I do that. And then it says it needs to reboot so I do that... and THEN it just goes into a wavy screen with the stars in the background and doesn't do anything? What am i missing here.. I thought that the menu screen was going to come up so i could reinstall my backed up games... help please.... (i put my 80GB back in and it works fine)
Re: PS3 HDD upgrade questions
Sending back the HDD, i think its bad. I tried hooking it upto my computer even and it didnt do anything. I think ill try a seagate harddrive next.
Re: PS3 HDD upgrade questions
It won't do anything if you've formatted it in a PS3. They don't show up on windows afterwards because they've been encrypted. Windows just won't even attempt to mount it. If you put it in Linux you'd be able to see it but not be able to do anything with it. What you need to do is go into Disk Management, (if it's been connected you'll see it there) and you can format it to FAT or NTFS whatever, doesn't matter. Just initialise the drive and try again in your PS3. Try starting your PS3 without the drive inside and see what it does. The operating system of the PS3 is not on the HDD it's installed to an onboard flash chip.env963 wrote:Sending back the HDD, i think its bad. Just because something doesn't show up in your fancy little GUI interface doesn't mean it's not there or broken. It's just in a format that Windows doesn't understand. You can blame Windows for that.
When I say Disk Management. I don't mean My Computer. I mean the program called Disk Management. You use this to manage your disks (Never would have guessed, would ya?). It's also where you can set up partitions and all that fancy crap that Explorer.exe doesn't let you do. It's usually found in admin tools. I think you can load it up directly from Run by typing in dskmgmt.msc and pressing enter.

Re: PS3 HDD upgrade questions
Well the stupid OS never showed up on the PS3 after I did a format and reboot of the new HDD. Like i mentioned it was just the wavy lines and the stars that the ps3 has as the default background. NO operating system... isn't the OS supposed to come up? Ill take out the HDD i have in there tonight and try to boot it up without the HDD see if the OS comes up.
