Howdy,
I just finished another top 10...

...and I'd like to see what y'all think. Please note that I put tactical RPGs in their own separate top 10, so that's why you won't find any in this one. Anyway, these lists are never truly finished—I'm always discovering new worthy additions—so I'd appreciate any feedback/comments you might have.

Not even an honorable mention for Romance of the Three Kingdoms or Front Mission? Or Tactics Ogre?
That's rough.

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Just revised the list a bit and added two entries, based on some recommendations from readers. Let me know if you have any other ones. Thanks!

Nice to see Lord Monarch and Metal Marines represented, though the latter seems to be more of a crapshoot than a strategy game. (The later stages give you a single missile and a prayer to breach enemy defenses.)
Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen (SNES)
Very much a quasi-real-time strategy RPG and not the tactical kind it's sequel (Tactics Ogre) is.
(And Tactical RPGs would also include the Super Robot Wars series, Front Mission, Vixen 357, GemFire, Dragon Knight 4, Langrisser II, etc.)
Canon Fodder
On the Mega Drive/Genesis, SNES (PAL) and GBC. Yes, it is a PC port (just as Civilization, also on consoles, is) -- but a darn fun one.
King Arthur's World (SNES)
Not really worth a mention other than to note that the gameplay is heavily reminiscent of Lemmings.
Castle Quest
THe later stages draw similarities to Metal Marines. This is a luck-based strategy-RPG, but not to the extent of Suguro Quest (Famicom). There is a Famicom version, which includes a tutorial and stage-designer, and a bare-bones GameBoy version in Europe. It's akin to chess, but when pieces fight, each draws a card. Each type of piece has a certain range of draws, which makes capturing a King (who has a small range of high cards) very risky.
Kingdom Crusade (GB)
It is dated, but it is an expanded form of Battle Chess (or Archon) with a much bigger and diverse board. Instructions are in the game's demo. Not particularly deep, but very unique and refreshing.

My scheduling skills have died of dysentery; I hope to visit at least on a monthly basis.
