Re: The Wrestling Thread
Yeah I also try to ignore their real life personalities but it's hard. I read Bret Hart's book and HBK and HHH are made out as real pricks. Kind of annoyed me as they are legends in the business. I know however that The Rock and John Cena are great people as well as legends. But the Chris Benoit thing is weird to me still. I believe he is one of the greatest ever and a true legend, but he won't be considered one now. It's a shame. And knowing that Hogan generally doesn't like putting people over whilst others like Jericho and Kane have done it for years does annoy me. I noticed this recently when I watched Summerslam 2006 and Hogan was having a match with Randy Orton as part of his legend killer plot. And Hogan was so slow and Orton still young and ACTUALLY wrestling instead of punching and back raking, yet Hogan somehow won. The same pay per view though, Flair vs Foley was incredible the amount of torture their bodies took, they both were great and sold each other well. I never got that with Hogan, but then didn't Michaels oversell everything in his match with Hogan lol.

Re: The Wrestling Thread
I just read this article from 411mania.com and I wanted to see how everyone felt about wwe posting these comments.
- WWE sent a demand to a website that called them a wrestling company to change their wording. TVWeek.com had a headline that ran "'Drew Carey inducted into pro wrestling Hall of Fame." They received an email from WWE publicist Kellie Baldyga, ordering them to the headline because "We are no longer a wrestling company but rather a global entertainment company with a movie studio, international licensing deals, publisher of three magazines, consumer good distributor and more."
The publicist further said "No, we don't do wrestling events. They're entertainments. And we don't call them wrestlers. They're superstars and divas."
TVWeek refused to removed the article rather than change the headline

Re: The Wrestling Thread
That's pretty pathetic considering the WWE stands for World WRESTLING Entertainment. Even if it is an entertainment company, the entertainment is wrestling. Their training facilities for "superstars" and "divas" are Ohio Valley WRESTLING and Florida Championship WRESTLING. So they are wrestlers. Even if The Great Khali wants to prove otherwise.mas wrote:I just read this article from 411mania.com and I wanted to see how everyone felt about wwe posting these comments.

Re: The Wrestling Thread
Yeah, that's pretty stupid. If the WWE wants us to view them as PURE entertainment they should get rid of rings, referees, titles, commentators, ring announcers and even matches. Instead they can just do two hours of backstage segments on every Raw or Smackdown. We can focus more on the divas and their relationship troubles and we can cut to commercials whenever something dramatic is about to happen like Randy Orton walking into his dress room and seeing every member of New Nexus there staring at him. We can also have musical cues constantly playing during every segment just like they do with those cheesy Undertaker/Kane backstage segments. They should start hiring stunt doubles for anything physical since these guys aren't "athletes" or "wrestlers", they are "actors" and "superstars". Oh, and Vince can start giving everyone a raise since they are serious actors now and might actually win academy awards now.Razzmatazz wrote:That's pretty pathetic considering the WWE stands for World WRESTLING Entertainment. Wrestling is wrestling, it's NOT like other entertainment and shouldn't be treated as such. I hate when they brag about Raw staying on tv longer than other tv shows. Pro Wrestling is nothing like regular tv shows and should in no way shape or form be compared to them

Re: The Wrestling Thread
Agreed. And considering shows such as Coronation Street here in England have been on 3 times a week since the 1960s, it's not really a big thing. I have noticed that Raw is increasingly just segments and promos rather than matches. I think the last good match I saw was Morrison vs Miz in that Tables match. This is probably because of the build up to Wrestlemania. Either way, I don't watch wrestling for acting or great story telling, that's what HBO shows are for, or the cinema. I want to see matches with the odd bit of promo or even backstage brawls (what happened to those!?).Gamerforlife wrote:

Re: The Wrestling Thread
This mentality is nothing new for WWE. Vince has been calling wrestlers superstars for years. And he began trying to infuse more entertainment and celebrities with wrestling since he took the company over in the early 80s. Remember Rock-N-Wrestling? Or the MTV crossovers? What about all the celebrities: Liberace, Mr. T, Bob Uecker, Cyndi Lauper, Ray Charles, and so many others. If you want old-school wrestling, then your looking in the wrong place if your looking at WWE for it. You have to look at independent leagues for that, and Ring of Honor. WCW used to be the mainstream fix for it before Bischoff gained full control.

Re: The Wrestling Thread
The problem with not calling them wrestlers is that it is actually disrespectful to the talent. The athleticism, physicality and skill are a big part of what makes the shows fun to watch. They put their bodies on the line WRESTLING. It isn't promos and jokes that cause injuries. It's WRESTLING that does that. Are we not even going to acknowledge what it is they are doing every time they put their bodies on the line in the ring? That seems very disrespectful to me. And if we can't call them wrestlers they what do we call what they do in the ring? Fighting? Choreographed dancing? WTF!? It's a wrestling match damnit! Unless Kali is in the ring.......
This isn't UFC. They aren't mixed martial arts specialists. This isn't Hollywood so they're not actors either. They're wrestlers. I don't mind the superstar label as in my mind that just means wrestling superstars, which is fine. I mean they are "stars" to many of us sure, but taking the world wrestling out of the equation is just stupid. That's like saying that we can no longer call football players athletes. No, they are football mega celebs! Yeah, that's what we'll call them.

Re: The Wrestling Thread
Random thoughts as I watch Raw
Apparently, Michael Cole has taken it upon himself to make the women's division look like a joke
John Cena via Satellite
Wait, didn't the Rock say we didn't need to know when or where he'd show up on Raw? They just announced him for next week
Like seeing Kane and Show having something to do at this year's Mania. I half expected them to chokeslam Koslov and Santino
That "Snookie" music makes my ears want to commit suicide
