Agree like for westerner i think its pretty hard to tell japanese apart from chinese.

But interesting part playing Yakuza 3 i notice that when the Japanese showed off the chinese chef. The chinese chef was very paled in complexion compared to the yakuza which had more darker complexion but not by much. You can see this also in shenmue games, where the Japanese try to differ the chinese from the japanese.

I used to have that same difficulty, but having spent years learning Chinese from Mainland Chinese teachers and traveling all throughout Asia made me able to distinguish between most Asians fairly effortlessly. The Japanese really look nothing like most Asians.

i do agree to certain extent... but being asian myself i do surround myself with alot of Asian national. But i do think theres there are plenty who are in the grey area.
Its not so black and white...some japanese men can pass more for Southeast asian than mainland chinese. As for Japanese women ... many asian women throughout asia can alter there appearance to look like them in term of fashion and hairstyle.
