I feel like I should mention Vandal Hearts. It's not all that unknown, but I don't see it get brought up very often, and it's one of best PSX SRPGs. The sequel is pretty good too.

Exactly what I was looking for

In all seriousness, the PS1 doesn't really have a lot of hidden gems, and a lot of the ones I've seen so far aren't 'gems' (although, most are much better than that Bomberman spin off).

In fact some of the suggestions here aren't even hidden. Croc was actually fairly popular for example.

I found a copy of Vandal Hearts II at a flea market not to long ago. Had to pass on it though. The poor disk was scratched to hell :(

Okay open mouth insert foot, here are three.

ImageAssault Rigs PSX

A pre Dual Shock controlled game inspired by the tanks from Tron. This one uses every button on the PSX pad. Because it is pre Dual Shock, this also works beautiful on any PSX adapted Arcade Stick. This is the perfect game for my Zaxxon modded arcade stick. This is such a great Tank Arcade game, I also hunted down the PC version

No, not Skull Monkeys but the original. A claymation PC game that was released for the PSX in Japan only. No worries, very little dialog in this game. Thankfully the Hall of Records is not in the Playstation version. A puzzle platformer, this one is very intriguing. Another unique controller capable game, can be played with the PSX Mouse or a Nyco Trakball. :D

A great Neverhood site! All kinds of trivia including Faqs and Maps:

No, not Little Big Planet. I saved the best for last.

I mentioned this one in my PAL Conversion Guide. THE GAME that is worth converting to play on an NTSC system. Another PC game that got a PSX Europe and PSX Japan release only. An adventure with a bit of platformer overtones. There is so much to discover and unusual characters to meet. The four different modes of movement, a different approach. This game has one of the best endings, the credits screen is worth waiting for. 8)

The Oddworld games were immensely popular...

CRTGAMER, great call on The Neverhood. Really a great game, a hidden gem in every way.
