This episode of "The Game Overthinker" is a character study on Bayonetta in particular, but it ends up being a really interesting discussion about how women are depicted in video games in general.

sweet, I'll check this out... does he "touch" on Catherine?
Re: Overthinking female sexuality in videogames
I usually find a lot to nitpick with the Overthinkers assertions (in particularly, the implied universal nature of his opinions) but on this one I am going to come right out and say it:
The dude is projecting his own insecurities on his audience while insulting the everyones intelligence.
While it's definitely a 'no duh' factoid that women in games are designed with marketing in mind first and the actual characterization a distant second, the idea that Bayonetta was designed with some greater notions in mind than ANY other sexualized video game female is absurd.
The comparisons to characters from DoA or SF are infantile. He does not even take into account the fact that most of the tropes of female character design were created to accommodate low-res sprite graphics and early low-poly 3D. Those tropes, now established, are maintained because they have become trademarks of the respective franchises. Hi res 3D graphics with a bajillion polygons give you the opportunity to create a brand new semi-realistic, proportional character archetype without losing any brand identifiable characteristics. That simply was not an option before.
Oh and here's a 'no shit' moment. "Waddya mean female characters from 2D fighters are shallow tropes!?" I am sorry but fighting games in general (2D fighters in particular) are not known for their character development. When you only have 20 seconds for the player to scan through the character portraits of the entire cast and draw a conclusion about each of them, the personalities implied to be behind those digitized faces is not exactly a priority.
Note how he did not bother to make comparisons to female characters from ANY other type of franchise or genre.
I am happy this guy has spent countless hours masturbating in front of his PS3 to the Bayonetta pause menu but his condescending bullshit is over the top this time.

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I've never heard a single word this guy has had to say. I guess maybe I shouldn't start now?

Only thing I ever saw was that one where he talked about people hating Other M. He pretty much asserted that people who dislike Other M and it's portrayal of Samus are actually closet misogynists.
Never bothered with anything else he did after that.

I had to stop watching The Game OverThinker for this reason. Everytime I watch one of his videos, I end up pausing every couple of minutes and yelling at the screen. The whole "VIDEO GAMES COME FROM JAPAN" shtick pisses me off to no end.Flake wrote:I usually find a lot to nitpick with the Overthinkers assertions (in particularly, the implied universal nature of his opinions)
Bayonetta was designed with a higher purpose. That purpose being to have her clothes taken off as many times as possible...the idea that Bayonetta was designed with some greater notions in mind than ANY other sexualized video game female is absurd.
He's pretty lazy like that.Note how he did not bother to make comparisons to female characters from ANY other type of franchise or genre.

When games cost $60 a pop, you've got to find ways to get more bang for your buck!irixith wrote: As a girl, I'd just to add..
