Japan Quake/Tsunami
Re: Japan 8.9M Quake/Tsunami
Talked to the manager and owner of the pet store I work at today about donations. We have done it in the past, just ask people to round up to the nearest dollar when they are checking out - we raised about $4,000 the last time we did this and that was just for a local rescue. Only thing is they will probably make it animal-related, raising money to support the bringing in and taking care of search and rescue dogs - that's what we did during Katrina. Katrina was a bit easier since it was in the US and the dogs belonged to US forces/organizations. Not sure who is in charge of such a thing in a situation like this (I am sure there are US organizations involved in bringing in dogs and there are obviously other countries doing this, but how do you get money to them).

I just had my wife translate to confirm. Holy shit... how does this asshole stay in power? Who votes for this prick???This is very infuriating. The governor of Tokyo Ishihara said...http://www.asahi.com/national/update/03 ... 40356.html
Like Hashiriya's family, my wife told her mother and youngest sister (housewife/mom) and niece that they could come to Canada to stay with us until all is safe. I really don't have the resources to help them, but I'm sure I'd find a way if need be. I don't really expect them to come, but if they do of course I'll help them however I can with lodging, food and love.
I worry about them getting through Canada, and potentially US, customs/immigration without knowing English.

I am, though. Sad to say, but there is a lot of ignorance here in the USA. I've read a lot of racist comments about Japan lately.Breetai wrote:I'm not American.Inazuma wrote:It's also really nice that they don't riot and loot at times like this. We Americans can really learn a lot from Japan.![]()

The news are being total idiots about radiation to the Nth degree. The warnings are for people to stay indoors for a reason, IT WORKS TO KEEP THEM SAFE.
Thee radiation currently being emitted is simple alpha radiation which if you paid attention in your HS science classes know can be blocked by something as simple as a sheet of paper.
Beta radiation, blocked by tin foil.
And on up the ladder until you get to the big stuff. Hell, a bottle of beer literally has more radiation in it that the water from a nuclear reactor. Source: HS science class, and later again reinforced on the Discovery Channel in a special on radiation and atomic energy.
All the pundits are trying to sound smart by saying that there's no way anything but pure lead can block you from radiation, when in fact accidental exposure is so easily prevented it's ridiculous.
Hell, you can be shielded by 90% of all radiation following a nuclear fallout by simply standing under an overpass or small short bridge, or in a surface cave with a very small opening. You can even dig a man sized hole under your car and jump in and be protected for the few hours the large scale fallout lasts.

Heres interesting News From Japan
Japan to provide US$94m to Cambodia despite quake impact
-THE government of Japan today signed up to provide a total grant aid of US$94 million to Cambodia for social and economic development though the country was severely hit by the massive earthquake and tsunami on March 11.
The exchange of notes for the grant was signed between Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namhong and Masafumi Kuroki, Japanese ambassador to Cambodia, presided over by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.
According to the media release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the aid will be used to implement three projects: the flood and drainage improvement in Phnom Penh (US$45 million), replacement and expansion of water distribution system in provincial capitals (US$33.66 million), and improvement of equipment for demining activities (US$15.83 million).
The Friday's catastrophic earthquake in Japan, measuring 9.0 magnitudes on the Richter scale, has claimed 2,414 lives and left 3,118 others missing in Japan by 8:00 am local time, said the Japanese National Police Agency.

Yesterday, I read a sensible commentary on the misinformation about the nuclear plants in Japan: http://bravenewclimate.com/2011/03/13/f ... planation/Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:The news are being total idiots about radiation to the Nth degree. Simply put, the risk of a nuclear catastrophe is almost zero. Many reports are saying that there could be a nuclear explosion of some sort. There's no such risk in fact.
