The s-video NES (av famicom)

Post by Drakon »

This is my rgb/s-video modded av famicom (japanese nes model 2). The reason I chose the av famicom is because it has the cleanest video when rgb modded out of all the commercial nes/famicom models. Using my nes to famicom adapter this thing plays all of my nes games. I used an expensive kit that's specifically designed for this mod.

Here's the internals

Here's a couple of screenshots

Here's the worklog

Here's the youtube vid that doesn't do it full justice but atleast gives you an idea of how it looks

Thanks for watching

Nice looking! And this would be a RGB mod. NES RGB PPU outputs RGB. ;)

I'm probably wrong, but aren't you the same guy that RGB modded another NES and...well...wired it wire-by-wire to the CPU? hehe :3 Good to see improvement if you were. :P

It's nice if you read the first sentence of a post once in a while.

Also this kit converts the rgb to very clean s-video. Yes the ppu outputs rgb I'm glad you learned that aren't you so clever  . But if you take a look at the picture there're a big kit pcb sitting between the ppu chip and the output wires :o . The kit (small pcb) that the ppu is plugged into takes the rgb and converts that rgb into s-video. It also outputs rgb. I'm posting this so people who don't have rgb tvs (most of the western world) know that there's a mod available to make the system run on standard tvs. This kit is from japan because in japan a s-video mod is for this system is popular too. I'm assuming this mod is popular in japan because from what I've read it looks like most tvs in japan don't accept rgb either.

And yes that was me. And there was nothing wrong with doing it "wire-by-wire". That system still works fine. And it turned out to be useful for the sake of clearing up video distortion. At first I did a system with the socket soldered straight onto the pcb and the distortion was crazy so I removed the socket and added wires so I could rewire things if I needed to for the sake of improving the video distortion (which I managed to do) :o . The av famicom has an improved pcb where the video distortion is almost completely gone so for this system I was able to solder the ppu socket straight onto the pcb without any worry.

Oh well, just know that when you say NES and SVideo in the same sentence, to the devs and other modders who know it isn't the best, they kinda just laugh. Sorry, but this happened last time I posted your mod since you said that. I'm trying to help you dude. But nice not to see that other type of moding again. Have fun.

ETA: Replacing the caps on the NES power supply cleans up the video, you might want to try that for getting it even clearer/better. See this post on NESDev:

Do this, replace some power supply caps. Might get a better picture. That AV looked damn good after he did they, maybe the RGB would look even better after that. :)

Right rgb is slightly better than s-video. But it's nice building something that works on almost any tv out there. And yes my system does rgb too. I got someone to replace caps in his rgb nes and he said it made no difference. Also I was told about someone who completely removed the rf section from the pcb and fed a rgb nes clean power from an arcade machine psu and still had the interference.

.....and that post is on nintendoage not nesdev.....

Also the video interference this guy was getting is very different fom the jailbars you get on the rgb nes.

True. But I also believe theres a jailbars solution too....I forget when and don't want to look. And I actually haven't seen RGB on nearly any TV, But I'm pretty sure it's less popular then SVideo so it doesn't matter.

Here's a serious idea, you ever pick up an arcade game monitor? I'm sure it'd look even better on an arcade monitor, you'd get nice big and crisp pixels....mmm.

Yeah, the topic is on NA too, but he never posted the reason on NESDev so I just used the NA post.
