Re: vote for the greatest games of all time
Sorry but I'm voting for none of those. This thread is too repetitive of what we already have out there, more than once.

This seems like an interesting concept. However, you (geozeldadude) should PM a mod or Racketboy and see if can make it more official and better structured.
If you just try to do it yourself you wont get the amount of responses you want and will probably abandon it in a few weeks.

Yeah, ask dsheim, he surely will help you!saturnfan wrote: However, you (geozeldadude) should PM a mod
Anyways, the system fails because voting is not a good way to achieve the objectiveness that "greatest of all time" requires. I would also argue that it's an excercise in futility as you haven't defined "best" and everyone who votes will have a different opinion on the subject. There's also no way to avoid popularity affecting the perceived quality, the number of people that have played XCOM, Deus Ex or Robotron is low while everyone has played Tetris and Super Mario Bros. There are simply too many games and too little objectivity.
So yeah. Ballz3D wins.

Re: vote for the greatest games of all time
of course there's no way to achieve objectivity, and all voting systems are going to have their flaws. but i still think this is a potentially interesting exercise in that the people on this site seem to have a wider range of experience than many others. i agree that the main problem is going to be "popularity" vs "greatness", but i don't see any way of avoiding that outside of making every person play every nominated game before voting and, more realistically, encouraging people to not vote at all if they don't think any of the games in the current poll deserve to be on the "greatest games" list. i think this method does a reasonably decent job of de-emphasizing obvious choices and helps highlight some less-obvious choices. this first poll itself doesn't really include any obvious choices, and the results have already been interesting, to me at least. also, part of what will really make this worthwhile is having people nominate games that haven't been included.General_Norris wrote:Anyways, the system fails because voting is not a good way to achieve the objectiveness that "greatest of all time" requires. re: "greatness", i personally think it's fine to leave that open to interpretation, which is why i didn't try to define it.

Re: vote for the greatest games of all time (poll #2 3/20/11)
although there were some glitches with the board, poll #2 is up. 4 games have been carried over from the first poll, and now things should get a bit more interesting. will those 4 games be able to hold on for another week or will they get ousted by the new competition? we'll have to see.
also, as a reminder, feel free to send me suggestions of games you think are among the "greatest of all time" and whose titles start with the letters "A" or "B" to include in the next poll.

I agree with pretty much all of this. Including the part about Ballz 3D.General_Norris wrote:Anyways, the system fails because voting is not a good way to achieve the objectiveness that "greatest of all time" requires. just a notice in case anyone wants to vote before the second poll closes.

I like this approach. It seems more thorough than most attempts at making a best top ten list.
I feel old when talking to anyone my age yet too inexperienced to effectively talk to anyone older. Life is grand that way.

I like this idea as well. Plus, I think our members have much better game experience than all those game editors (uhuh yeah, let's make a list of best RPGs of all time, and only have JRPGs on it).
But I still think the PC is going to hurt a little. Most people here are console gamers (though it's far better than how close minded IGN and gametrailers editors are).
