Any way to tell if a Ps1 disc is black label or GH?

Post by SwooshBear »

I have quite a few PS1 disc only games, and for completion purposes was wondering if there's any way to tell if the game is black label or greatest hits by looking at the disc. Thanks for your help!

Most Greatest Hits discs are uncolored with simple black text and designs. Part of the deal with putting a game on a Greatest Hits production run is to minimize cost, and simplifying the disc art into something inexpensive to print is one way they did this. Some non-GH games can have simple designs by nature, so it can be difficult to determine for absolute certain.

Alright thanks. Just checked a few discs and some of my greatest hits games (final fantasy 7, metal gear solid, tomb raider) don't have the GH after the disc id. Anyone know why?

Because they are black label disc.
Did you buy them used?
Back in the PSone days EBgames would put the disc in paper sleeves and put the jewel cases in display.
you would take the jewel case to pay and they would take out the first disc they would find to go with the jewel case.
They did not care if it was Black Label or Greatest Hits, all they cared is that it was the same game.

My metal gear solid was used but both discs are like that, and the case/manual are GH. Must be some crazy chances. Tomb raider and ff7 my father bought so I'm not sure about those. That would suck but oh well. At least I have the games.

I check my GH games and not all of them have GH, I'm sorry but I was not correct on my last post.
The only thing in common with all of them is they are Shiny Silver Top with Black Silk Printing.
No Color.

You can tell for sure if the Final Fantasy 7 is greatest hits if the discs are uncolored. If they are white, it's black label.

It's okay. Yeah the GH discs that didn't have the GH in the disc ID fit that description. They all match, thank goodness.
