PS1 longbox/jewel case, greatest hits/black label
I have benn looking into collecting some PS1 games, and alot of games seem to have different variations. Twisted metal has a longbox vertion, cd jewel case version, and a greatest hits version, as doea Alien Trilogy.
My question is are there any difference in these different versions other than appearence, or are there gameplay differences as well? Which version of Twisted MEtal should I get? Longbox, jewel case, or GH?

Longbox are early PS1 games before the move to the mass produced and cheaper jewel cases started being used, the games are generally the same (I may be wrong, might be slight revisions between some). Its just the price that is different because less longbox versions of games were released, of course they will cost more. DS actually has a complete longbox collection (or very close to one).
The difference between black label (a regular CD release) and greatest hits / platinum is that the black label are usually part of the initial print run. (ie first moillion before the game became platinum, etc) the games are again generally exactly the same, its just the price that is different and collectors prefer black label.

I don't think the code is different on any of the different versions, with the obvious exception of something like RE: Director's Cut or Final Doom.

I think back then, before downloadable patches for consoles, the GH versions of games were often patched to remove glitches present in the original version.dsheinem wrote:I don't think the code is different on any of the different versions, with the obvious exception of something like RE: Director's Cut or Final Doom.

Care to back that up with a citation? Why would they make a new gold master for a GH version? Doesn't make financial sense at all. Platinum versions were designed to save money since they usually didn't have full colour manuals, or an image on the disc, it was just plain text printed directly onto the disc. That is mostly why they aren't as valuable (plus they just look ugly).BoringSupreez wrote:I think back then, before downloadable patches for consoles, the GH versions of games were often patched to remove glitches present in the original version.dsheinem wrote:I don't think the code is different on any of the different versions, with the obvious exception of something like RE: Director's Cut or Final Doom.

Not sure about PS1, but some PS2 games such as Midnight Club 3 Greatest Hits have additional levels. I'm still trying trying to find out if PS2 Star Wars Battlefront II has anything added in the Greatest Hits release.

AFAIK Silent Hill 2 and Midnight Club 3 are the only games that do this and there's no reason to think other GH releases might. No PS1 games have extra/enhanced content to the best of my knowledge.CRTGAMER wrote:Not sure about PS1, but some PS2 games such as Midnight Club 3 Greatest Hits have additional levels. Longboxes are early print PS1 games, and thus, the least common. There aren't a lot of notable longbox games, only a little over 100 games were released before the rest of the PS1 library was issued in jewel cases. Some of the harder-to-find longbox games would be X-Com UFO Defense, Resident Evil, Discworld, Twisted Metal, Primal Rage, etc. Some longboxes are cardboard, some are large jewels like Sega Saturn games - I don't believe this has any bearing on the value, but most longboxes were cardboard. The difficult part in collecting longboxes isn't finding them, but finding them complete and in good shape. They wear down and warp really easily. Longboxes aren't as sought-after as other games either, so should you attempt to assemble a complete collection of longboxes, be prepared to spend more money than they are likely to be worth and hope someday the value goes up.

Virtua Fighter 4's Greatest Hits version introduced 2 new characters and was named Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution. Also, Devil May Cry 3 released on the Greatest Hits line as Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition. I don't own it, so I can't recall what for sure, but I believe there was something additional added to it.dsheinem wrote:AFAIK Silent Hill 2 and Midnight Club 3 are the only games that do this and there's no reason to think other GH releases might.
