How come?

Post by lordofduct »

This isn't about here because I usually don't ask technical questions here at racketboy...

I frequent a lot of forums that deal with different technical related stuff: C#/XNA forums, Actionscript3.0 forums, Math forums, Computer tech forums, etc. I know I'm going to be asking quite a few questions, so in return I help out as much as I can. I like to sit around and answer questions on tons of things, and when it is a question I don't know the answer to I figure out what the answer is via research and testing. It makes for a REALLY good learning experience... "practice makes perfect" you know.

I know I'm not the only one who does this. I see other people cruising around and helping out just as much as I do... if not a ton more because they know more then me. But When I post my own questions I get little to no responses and usually get no where. My post generally just falls into oblivion in the mess that is old posts.

Do any of you have this issue at forums (doesn't have to be tech related... it could be this very forum!)?

[EDIT]
Irony may fall on me and this forum dies with merely 1 post. I will giggle inside if this is true!

All the time. Even on forums I have been on for a long time.

Sometimes if I notice a thread that someone has posted and nobody has responded within a couple of days I may just say "Sorry mate wish I could help" or something along those lines just to let the person know that their question hasn't fallen on deaf ears.

As far as other forums, don't use em. Mostly all full of dickheads like me. :D

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.

I tend to go and research a problem if i don't know the answer off hand. especially if the subject matter interests me!

sometimes information on a problem can't be found with any amount of research until someone shares their information

I very much agree... I don't just post obligatory questions every five seconds on simple stuff I can find easy. For instance questions about specific properties about a certain class in C#... the entire class hierarchy is available to be seen on the internet at msdn.com and they explain every method, property, and give examples. Why ask in a forum? But people do...

I just reference them the website and say "bookmark it".

But some questions just aren't as easy to find answers to. They aren't well documented, or you aren't quite sure how to word it properly for a search engine to pop up adequate results; some people just aren't up on the techy lingo.

Speaking of techy lingo... I come from a Math based background. Math, Science, and Computer Science seem to have distinctly different nomenclature. For instance I spent 1 hour trying to dig up a way to get the "Magnitude" of a Vector3 (this was a long time back before I found the msdn website)... alas the method did not exist because in Computer Science they call it "Length"... a name Math reserves for Rays and not for Vectors. I had already built my own method for getting magnitude before I found it.

... Vectors receive the 'magnitude' name for its length merely because a vector is value with direction and strength. It doesn't just represent distance or other tangible values... but also force, strength, and other not so obvious 'magnitudes'. Magnitude also gives the idea of a positive only value.

@aaron - there aren't many stupid questions... maybe simple, but not stupid.

[EDIT]
I have a feeling no one responds to my questions because I post such long posts. I don't know why I do, I speak the same way as well.

I just recently discovered this board a few weeks ago, and all the questions and stuff I've posted have been met with lots of answers, but I know what you mean, it all depends on the board, there still aren't alot of people on this board it seems like so everything is alot more personable.

I don't really go out of my way to help a stranger. If I appear to be helpful, I assure you, it was an accident.
