So my aunt has a broken HD Sony WEGA

Post by AppleQueso »

My aunt has had an HD CRT Sony WEGA sitting in their garage for a long time now. Apparently it shut off one day and they weren't able to get it back on. I'm not sure exactly what's wrong with it, but I figure it might be worth looking at.

They say they plan to fix it, but it's been sitting in that garage for nearly a year now. I'm thinking about going over there and offering some cash for it. The question is, how much should I offer? I don't want to come across as insulting or anything. Any ideas?

A trick to get it working, could be simple or major. Since its in the family, maybe they could let you try to fix it first? Once that heavy tube is out of their house, you will probably be stuck with it though. Maybe If the TV can be fixed easily, a predetermined payment of say 50 to 100 dollars. The Sony HD CRTs are one of the best, this is worth looking into.

Model number and size? The Sony Support site has PDF owners manuals.

Alright, so I got it now!

Gonna try a few things to repair it. I think I know what's wrong and I'm pretty sure the fix is going to be fairly involved (soldiering), but I'm confident I can handle it. Can't wait until this baby is working, it's HUGE and oh god it's heavy.

Congrats, the HD CRTs are a lot heavier then the same sized non HD CRTs. Careful of that high voltage tube, hazardous even when unplugged.

Model number?

And I know all about the dangers of CRT tubes. I know how to discharge them. The parts I need come in tomorrow, I'll post some updates then.

A beautiful HD, very similar to mine, I have Sony 4:3 HD CRT KV32HS500.

The DVI attachment is not a problem, easily adapted to HDMI with a conversion cable and a couple RCA audio cables. The built in Memory Stick Reader is nice but only supports up to 128mb non pro magic gate sticks.

after two weeks or so of working on this TV, I've been unable to get it up and running. It had a fairly common error, but unfortunately the most common fix didn't work for me.

I'm not getting rid of it, but I'm giving up for now when it comes to fixing it. I'll come back to it later (maybe a month or two) and try again.

On the plus side, I got some component cables recently and have found that my other TV looks fantastic.

I got my brother's old trinitron (not hd) and it has made my retro gaming soo much more enjoyable. It was heavy as hell though. I'd love to have a WEGA. Hope you get it working eventually working. That thing is quite a find.
