Burnt out on retro games?

Can't say I'm any different from everyone else who's posted. I go through the full gaming dry spells (just came off of one that lasted a little over a month, which isn't long compared to other times, but still...)

In general, I try to balance the retro vs. new playing. I still have a hard time thinking of stuff as retro, just because the "retro" stuff I'm interested in (8 and 16 bit) was new when I was growing up. Essentially, though one game or another from that time might give me an all new experience, it still won't be anything I haven't seen before in terms of the capability of systems from that era. A old game can be wonderfully fun and I'll fall in love with it, but they never "wow" me, so to speak.

Which is part of why I still love new games, despite the industry going in a direction I don't really approve of at the moment (but that always happens, it'll change again in a few years). I still crave brand new experiences, and modern games have the sheer horsepower to do some crazy things, which are always fun to see.

But that's just me. For the OP's situation... well, you seem to have accepted your stance on it, so it may be best to just leave it at that. I say consider it money saved and just don't worry about it for the time being. Maybe one day you'll go back to it. Maybe not, and you'll find other, more rewarding interests.

I can see what your saying... i whittled out alot of games that i know for a fact that I wont play again. I put them up on ebay. Now with the games I do have. Such as resident evil for the psx, I put that in the other day. Wow, I used to love that game and totally had a blast playing it. But when I was trying to play it I really got burned out and bored pretty quickly. I guess that game really feels dated to me now. (which it is) But I find that I can play all the panzer dragoon games and not get bored... hmmmm simple yet addictive games. I guess I really just need to focus on games that I TRULY want. Youtube does wonders on some of the games I used to play and gives me that quick retro fix. I just watch youtube videos and that seems to give that "fix".

I somewhat understand what he's going through, as I've just been burnt out on video games in general lately. The only thing I've been playing these last few weeks has been Minecraft. But there's been a lot of personal things happening in my life that have distracted me from video games as well, so I don't often feel I have the time or the will to sit down and play.

First, both of my younger brothers moved away within a week of each other. One is currently in Navy boot camp while the other has relocated to teach English in South Korea, so not only do I not get to see them often, I can't really contact them easily either. I had moved away in the past, but only to attend graduate school, and I had only traveled a few hours.

On top of it, I've made a few new friends, started a job tutoring Korean children, had a few emergencies with animals, had some medical issues, and been attempting to find professional work. Every one of these things is something that should put video games in the backseat, and they have. Plus, after the last few months where I was playing games constantly, I just wanted something else to do.

That said, when I do start playing again, I'm thinking of checking out my copy of Gundam Battle Assault. I keep hearing good things.

Hmm. Yesterday I ended up playing my Sega Genesis for nearly 2 hours straight and had a blast. I only stopped because I had too. Comix Zone and Afterburner 2 are awesome btw. So maybe I just needed something different. The majority of what i've been playing lately have been older 3D games, which, don't seem to have aged as well as 2D games at least from my experiences yesterday.

Anyway good to know I'm not alone on my feelings.

I actually get burned out more on modern games, because they're just too damn long .. and too many have that "easy for 40 levels, and then ridiculously hard for the last 10" thing going on. Aka no difficulty curve. I still find retro games more satisfying in terms of length, difficulty curve, challenge and feeling of reward. I've oft considered just dropping current gaming altogether, as it is going in too many directions that rub me the wrong way anyway.

it's also a lot cheaper to stay at least a generation behind. i find more games that i enjoy playing for way, way less than i do new 360, Wii or DS games. don't have a ps3 yet and i doubt i'll get one for this reason.

plus i'm just sick of the clutter in my house. i like having 3 main systems (xbox 360, wii, saturn) and 1 handheld (DSi). it keeps things interesting because it forces me to play the games that i already have and seek out new games one at a time rather than in huge quantities. when i have a ton of systems and i'm trying to collect for all of them, i develop a HUGE spending problem.

I hear what everyone is saying. I sold all my collection and only have a wii and a ps3. I want to buy mlb the show 2011 but i'm thinking that for 60.00 i can use the money on something else.
I put out a forum about ps1 games on the ps3 and how they looked and they do look better, but now I feel like I want to get back in the retro genre again but when I play some of the games I used to love as a teen, I get bored in a few minutes.
It's all on what mood your in about games. If you feel like going back to the youth days then play what you played as a kid for a few minutes then just buy a current gen game that you know you will get 60.00 worth of playtime into it.
Hey one more thing, DON'T just go out there and spend money on games you know you wont play. It's not worth it anymore for me anyways. I only picked up a few ps1 games I know I will play like crash and tekken 3 and street fighter alpha 3.
