Yeah, If I had to choose one NFL game from the last gen it would be NFL 2k5 over any version of Madden. If I'm not mistaken there are large online communities that still play it and updates the rosters every year.
100% agreed. In fact, ESPN 2k5 was really the only PS2 sports game I played by myself for an extended period of time. That game was really polished AND it was $20 brand new. If it hadn't been for the price, I probably never would have tried it, but almost everything seemed to be dead on.
I haven't played a Madden game since the announcement that they bought the rights to the NFL license and blackballed the ESPN 2k series. Because fuck EA for killing competition.

A little while ago, I decided to buy a bunch of PS2 sports games since they are so cheap, so I decided to buy at least one of each sport and I only picked the ones that had the highest metacritic ratings within that sport. Here is what I ended up buying back then. I bought all of this for $15 total.
ESPN NFL 2K5 - metacritic rating of 90
MLB 06 The Show - metacritic rating of 83
NBA 2K3 - metacritic rating of 89
NBA Street - metacritic rating of 89
NHL 2002 - metacritic rating of 92 (plus strong recommendation from Luke)
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004 - metacritic rating of 89
World Soccer: Winning Eleven 7 - metacritic rating of 93
The Hot Shots Golf series is still eminently enjoyable. Bright, cheerful atmosphere and cute characters who look suspiciously a lot like Miis. And best of all, the old-school "3 button press" style of golf swing rather than the thumb straining analog swing of the Tiger Woods games. Both 3 and Fore! are pretty much the same game, so take your pick.
