However, in Japanese sources, they are reporting 1000 casualties/missing COMBINED (400 dead/ 700 missing)*. I'm thinking that a lot of English reporters are mistranslating the kanji as 1000 confirmed dead, when this is not the case currently.

*it is now saying 1100 dead/missing combined.

Yeah, they are seeing this and misreading it: 死者・不明1000人超える
Funny how news sources such as Routers made that mistake. Someone updated Wikipedia to say 88,000 people were missing, actually misreading the 8.8 earthquake measurement. I updated Wikipedia accordingly. In other words, do not trust Wikipedia, Routers, CNN or the BBC (who also made the same mistake about 1000+ dead)!

My thoughts and prayers are going out to everyone over there, thankfully my relatives in Hawaii didn't need to be evacuated and are doing fine.

What a nightmare. I woke up late and was headed to work when I checked my facebook page and learned about what was happening there. Now I have been trying to sneak away as often as I can to try to get a grasp of what is happening. As always, the best reports are from you guys. Hope all is okay. What I know so far:

5th strongest recorded quake, strongest in recorded Japanese history
23 foot tsunami hit Japan (not sure where or when, heard it on KYW a few hours ago)
7 foot tsunami in Hawaii (saw briefly on CNN this morning)

I have seen some terrifying videos, the one video I saw of a whirlpool with a boat stuck in it was awful. Another of a tsunami hitting a beach, the wave was enormous and you could see how powerful it was. A lot of floating cars and debris that look like they are made of plastic by the way they are moving. Honestly, it was like watching a disaster movie, usually these movies are so over the top and exaggerated, but today's videos seem pretty on par.

Again, I still have pretty much no clue what's going on! It is like hearing something from a conversation and getting all worked up... only those situations usually turn out to be nothing, this just keeps getting worse and worse. I always hear about the Earth's axis shifting after these huge events, but never get a satisfying article going into detail - what does it mean, in what direction, any effects or is it just a fun fact? Seems like most articles say "scientists say this recent quake caused the axis to shift" and that's it.

Anyway, I hope everyone is okay, or that your family and friends are okay.

7th, at M8.8. Wikipedia, and its sources, are not accurate. This number was an early speculation that is now outdated. Still a HUGE quake!

I read the wave was about 10 metres (about 30 feet?). It hit around Sendai (NE part of Japan's main island). I have no idea about Hawaii.

What I found interesting is how non-Japanese media is mistranslating Japanese, and making things seem worse than they really are (still bad!).

Yeah, I usually don't put too much weight on statements like that unless they are WELL backed up. A quote or two from a popular media source (well respected or not) is not good enough.

I just got a text from my fiance. She was concerned because while the earthquake happened while her sister and nephew were in the air on the way to Japan from San Francisco. The quake struck at 2:45PM and they were due to land at 5PM. The runways at Narita were shut down, then they opened one of the runways. This caused a traffic jam in the sky. Flights with the least fuel had priority, so they had to circle around. That must have been unnerving. They were then stuck at the airport because their connecting flight to Komatsu was delayed. They finally made it to Komatsu. Now the woman can relax a bit now that all of her family is accounted for.

We'll see if that is still happening. Two of my friends in Miyagi prefectyre were able to reach me via facebook because their cellphones are dead, so that is the only good news.
Yeah after feeling aftershocks & more earthquakes all through the night, news saying things are getting worse, I don't think it'll be easy getting up there from Kanto.
Good to hear you got good news from friends there; I dunno about my coworkers' son yet or one of my friends in Tokyo.

I've lived in earthquake country my whole life and this by far has been the worst yet. It's so f'n unreal... like a disaster movie or some shit. :(

Japan racketeer checking in.

I don't live in the hardest hit areas of Japan but my area got 5.0 magnitude earthquakes and multiple aftershocks throughout the day. Just living through this was one of the craziest things I have experienced in all my life. I spent 5 hours trying to contact my friend in Aomori who was much closer to all the tsunami impacts. Fortunately she was fine and a in city out of reach of the tsunami.

My wife and I were without water, gas, and electricity for 10 hours. It was a cold night in our dark apartment. At least we had the forsight to stock emergency candles, radio, flashlights, and battery packs for our phones. I got to watch tv on my cellphone to see all the horrible footage of cars getting swept out to sea. I was shocked.

I feel so bad for all the north-eastern Japanese residents. Its going to be a long time before Japan recovers from this historic disaster. I never thought I would see something so catistrophic first-hand in my life.

I hope this event brings the world a little closer and reminds us that idiots like Charlie sheen, Lady gaga, Bieber, are not as important as pure human need.

Is that all of our Japanese regulars checked in? Japanese Peso is the only other one that comes to mind, though he posts less. Hope he's ok too. Anyone else?
