Neo Geo MVS 4 slot Help

Post by robbievgb »

So a local amusement company is getting rid of one of their 4-slot MVS machines for a really good price ($150). This includes 4 MVS carts (Fatal Fury 2, Real Bout Fatal Fury, Metal Slug 4 and Cyber Lip).

The buttons and joysticks were all still very responsive as if they had been replaced at one point in it's lifespan, and according to this site: http://www.hardmvs.com/xml/usa/usCabs.htm
The cab is the MVS-4-25. The cab itself was actually in really great condition. with the exception of the memory card / headphone slots which were there, but electronics themselves were missing, also there was only one working speaker.

If I were to pull the trigger on this I would want to turn this into a project and restore it piece by piece but I would still be able to play it during each stage of the process.

I don't mind the minor cosmetic issues at least for the time being, but my main concern is the 25" monitor which had a lot of burn-in and was very washed out., I would be fine replacing it with an LCD, and from what I read in another thread I'd need one of these guys:
http://www.jammaboards.com/store/cga/eg ... d_291.html. Or is that incorrect?

Does this seem worth the initial investment, especially If I'd have to sink extra money into a new monitor? Whats my best course of action for replacing th monitor with a LCD?

I have always wanted to own a MVS, and I thought I could use this as a fixer-upper, do you guys think it's worth it, despite the work it needs (mainly the monitor)? I have until Thursday to get back to the guy, so any advice would be awesome!

Its Neo Geo, go for it!

There are enough resources on the interned to walk you through restoring any pieces you want to swap out. Getting the games with it makes it a steal.

Yea those games alone are getting close to the asking price so its a great deal.

neo-geo.com can be helpful for this sort of thing, just do a lot of reading first.

Financially, you could buy the MVS and sell the carts and basically have gotten the machine for free. Back when I was into the neo scene 2 slot machines cost about $250 but yours a 4 slot for $150 :D . I'd buyit and if I didn't like it you could probably sell it for 100 bucks on craigslist and make a profit on the games as long as they're not boots.

An mvs cab with 4 carts for 150 is an absolute steal. Go for it.

Pull the trigger on that. The carts could fetch you $100 alone. Now you just have to line up transportation.

You've obviously read through this success story on this LCD conversion. Images of success on page 8.

I've read through it a few times and it basically explains the whole process.

I've considered changing out the large monitor in my 6 slot with an LCD but have decided to keep the CRT in until it completely dies.

Well I went down to the place, filled out some paper work and gave the guy my $150. I pick the machine up on Saturday afternoon. I probably won't be putting much work into it until we move in September (I'm storing it at a friend's house in the mean time), but I figured that will just give me time to save up money for the repairs.

Thanks for the encouragement everyone!

Whelp, after five hours of moving the machine, it is currently sitting in my buddy's office. I live in a second floor apartment, and the lease is up in September, so I plan to take it back from him when we move, hopefully to a first floor apartment or house.

We successfully hooked the board back up and played some metal slug 4. I took the other three cartridges home to do some cleaning on them.

After closer inspection, the Monitor doesn't have burn in, it is just a little off center and blurry. I plan on taking it to these guys:

and seeing if it is not something that can be repaired before I do an LCD replacement.

I'm no expert and don't have a 4 slot but on my 6 slot beneith the 2p buttons on the joystick layout are all the monitor controls.

Stupid question because I don't know if they're the same but have you tried these tuning screws? They helped clear up my monitor with a few minutes if tweaking.

If you have the same Wells K7000 as is in my 25-4r3, the included adjustment knobs should be enough. Width on the other hand, requires tweaking a horizontal width coil directly on the monitor board. My coil is shot, so the sides of the action are a little cut off, nothing major. Keep the CRT if you can! There's nothing like honest scanlines. =)

Here's a KLOV board sticky link, if you feel adventurous:
