Burnt out on retro games?

Lately I've been finding myself completely uninterested in playing older games. I still watch tons of videos of them on YouTube and read about them here. However, when I see something that might be amazing, I can't be bothered to track it down. Just the idea of buying and playing another old game makes me exhausted. I partly attribute this to too many games to play in the first place though.

I've gotten rid of nearly every single 'retro' console besides the Dreamcast and it usually sits in it's box unless I get the urge for Crazy Taxi. I figured I would try emulators for a while but I found it even less interesting than playing games on the original console.

Another possibility is I simply don't have nostalgia for most of the games I own. Being a younger member (relative to the general demographic of the site), most of my nostalgia is for stuff on the PS1 and early PS2. Problem is, as a kid, I played the hell out of all my games. So while I can find it fun to look up and watch a video of a game I had as a child, the idea of playing it makes me physically sick. I couldn't imagine sinking another minute in Gran Turismo or Tomba.

This has caused me to think that it's possible that retro games just aren't my cup of tea. Maybe in 10 years when we all look back at the PS2 as an archaic console that used physical media and physical controllers.

Now, I've had great times with lots of old games and have fond memories now of many games that I would have never played if I didn't start to look into older stuff. I just don't think I can really find it enjoyable anymore.

I hear what you're saying. I'm actually burnt out on current-gen games... so many are coming out, and they're so expensive. I think after this gen, I might stop buying new games all together and stick with the classics and my massive backlog.

Most of my nostalgia lies in the NES/Genesis/SNES era, so it's a little different for me. I can see how you would be burnt out trying to dig up the hundreds of great games pre-PS1 era, I think anyone would be.

That just happens every once in a while. I kinda go through periods where I don't touch my games at all. I've been watching a lot of movies lately for example.

Usually I eventually get back to it and am glad to have my nice collection up there.

It's a case of having the available money but not the available time. Lots of people here will snap up good deals in the wild, but that means you can easily get into a situation where you have more games then you can get through due to work/school and other time obligations.

When this happens to me, it's generally not so much a matter of new games versus old games. It's a matter of playing games, period.

I do primarily play older games, but it's not really a matter of nostalgia. I have a ton of old games that I loved from when I was younger. For the most part, I never play them. The older games I typically play are the ones that I didn't play in my youth. I don't think I ever actually played Castlevania more than once or twice before I played through it last year. I played M.C. Kids for the first time just a few years ago.

I'm not going to tell you what games you should be playing. That's probably about the least important issue ever.

You think this could be attributed to your age(17 according to your profile) and other things that might be more on your mind(girls, car, school, girls, different social events, girls, etc)that games take a backseat to at this time in your life?

To combat this I usually never play two games from the same generation in a row. I find that this causes me to never get too much of one console or generation and when I'm ready to come back to a certain generation after a brief hiatus I'm usually excited about it.

I have the same problem, I go thru phases when I cant get interested in playing retro games so I play new games for a few weeks, and then I get bored of those and go back to my old sega games. Sometimes I dont play at all for weeks, like at the moment I'm back into films so the games havnt had a look in, but that won't last long
