Games that we never can play again due to killed servers

Post by Thermoptic »

Im making and article about games that somehow where online based, either a game that only can be played online or downloaded with an internet connection and then for some reason where killed because the developers shut down the servers.

Here are some examples. Recently OutRun Online Arcade was pulled from the XBLA store "due to the expiry of the contract with Ferrari."
This game was only available as a downloadable game, and now we will never get our hands on this game again. And this is a reason why i hate dlc games, if the game had been released as a retail with on a cd then the game would live on forever.

Another example was the multiplayer online feature in Metal Gear Solid 3 that KONAMI shut down. The people who loved this game will now never be able to play this mode again.

There are also countless great flash based games that you only can play online in your webbrowser, but if the server should go down after some years.. the game will be dead forever.

As a retrogame player I think this is a very important issue. Maybe not many people thinks of this as a problem right now when all the servers are up. But how will the ps3 and 360 work in 20 years? Will the servers still be up? can i still download my games that i only purchased online? Probably not.. just look at Nintendos Satellaview that had a similar way of purchasing games "online".. those "servers" are long gone. But thanks to emulation the games where dumped and can be saved forever. And the current consoles will probably have the same problem :(

I would like more examples of games that where killed this way. And what your thoughts are.

EA shut down a bunch of them last year.

And just about every online game on the PS2 or Xbox can't be played online anymore.

Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst

We had so much fun playing this with friends. I think you can still play in private servers.
Thanks everyone...

Many earlier PC games used stand alone servers for matchmaking. However, most of these have had home-grown replacements made to enable multiplayer again.

I trust that one day there will be emulated versions of many of these types of games kicking around on the internet.

Monster Hunter 1 still pisses me off that they brought it offline. I got the game maybe 2 days before it went under so I had no idea what I was doing but I did log online at least once to say I did.

About browser games:
I think you can usually download flash games (.swf files) and play them offline.

About console games etc.: Indeed, this one of the main "benefits" of piracy - it is due to piracy that many games are going to be preserved in playable form. I made a similar comment recently in a discussion about preserving games historically (for museums and so on).

Unfortunately I'm sure that some games will just slip through the cracks and through the holes in the "safety" net of piracy. I don't know if online-only games in services like Xbox live are easy to "dump", it may be very difficult or even impossible to do so when some part of the code is running server-side due to concerns e.g. with cheating.

PSO is the big one that comes to mind.

Most of these dead games have independent servers though, so you can still find people to play with if you know where to look.
